That's the start of negotiation.
Lets start this over.
This truck is in Canada. There is no blue book here. What we have is something called the Canadian Black book.
The black book allows me to input the vehicle type, year, mileage options, etc. Based on this it gives me a $ range for the trade in value. The lower value ($17,000) is if the vehicle needs some reconditioning work, (tires, windshield, interior stains, scratches, etc) the higher value is if the vehicle is in mint condition (Ie: the dealer can instantly throw the vehicle on the lot with a for sale sign.
All of these $ figures are what I could expect to trade this vehicle in for, and are also what the dealer likely paid for this vehicle.
The only thing the black book doesn't account for is accident/hail damage, which makes sense as there are different magnitudes of repair.
So I'm not fudging any numbers here. All I'm trying to determine is what a $8000 hail claim would do to that trade in number, so I can determine if this truck is even worth looking at.
Now if someone says knock $0 off of the price because it's been fixed, then the truck isn't worth looking at to me.
However, if the price comes down $4000, then I will be more interested in looking at it. Especially so if the hail damage is superficial, and won't affect the long term reliability of the vehicle. I don't think dents or dings are very important in the life of a vehicle, but I also won't pay the same amount for a dented vs a dentless vehicle.
I'm not all in on this truck, I'm not trying to make it out as being better than it is, just trying to get an idea of how much I should discount it, how much the dealer is likely into it for, and then decide I'll be wasting my time looking at it.
I know I quoted you, but this is just some general info. A few posters seem confused about the numbers I'm throwing around and where they're coming from.
Hopefully this clears thing up a bit.
