need to move Win XP Outlook mail to Win7 Live Mail

Helping someone with an old WinXP computer where they used Outlook and have many folders setup to store the mail. They want to use Live Mail under Win 7 as its free and all a person needs who is not part of an office.

Unsure if the old computer will boot, but I can get the folders off the old hardrive. Everything seems to be under MY MAIL folder.

How to migrate the stuff so its all usable under Live Mail.

Thanks but neither of these really help. Outlook Express was more like Live Mail than it was Outlook and the instructions do not apply. And the new computer will have Live Mail not Outlook.

Thunderbird is also free, and is a FAR better program than the jumble that is Live Mail.

Unfortunately, the times I've done this, Live Mail insists on importing the OE messages into a separate "Imported Folders" folder, so there's a continuity break between the new messages that come in and the old, imported ones.

No matter how you do it, you'll need to know exactly where the DBX files are, on the old machine.
The Address Book will be a problem unless you can get the old computer to fire up.

If the old computer won't boot, you can temporarily plumb the old machine's hard drive into the new machine in order to access the files on the old drive.

I have the old workstation's harddrive connected to laptop via USB.

It looks like 3 options:
1) Pay $59 for a conversion program
2) Install Outlook Express on old computer, migrate to it and then convert Outlook Express to Live Mail
3) Install Thunderbird and it has various import capabilities.

I would move it up to Outlook.com and free yourself of having a thick mail client. The web interfaces for all the big email offerings are excellent these days.

How does that help with the many file folders where old email is stored on the harddrive?

You don't need to do any of those things if you really want to stick with Live Mail. Live Mail will import OE's DBX files and set them up as "Imported Folders" in Live Mail.

If you know where the DBX files are, just do an "Import" in Live Mail, and point it at the DBX file location on the USB'd drive.

I used to be a big fan of thunderbird ... before I had to start supporting it.

If you get FEW emails, don't mind your emails being stored in CLEAR TEXT, then it will work.

However, if you want ease of backup, archival - you absolutely cannot beat the Microsoft email products.
