1. What kind of vehicle you have

2002 Chevrolet Silverado, single cab, 2wd, 1500, 4.8 v8, 150,000 miles

2. What your owner's manual says -- not just viscosity, but certifications (look for acronyms like API SM, ILSAC GF-4, etc.) and change intervals as well

I do not have the owners manual, oil cap states 5w30.

3. Where you live

Southeast Texas, 100 degree summers, 35 degree winters.
4. How you drive (easy? hard? fast? slow?)

Fairly aggressive. Highway speed is 80 usually. Fairly aggressive in town also.

5. What your daily drive is like (short trips? long trips? city? highway?)

30 miles round trip for work. 66% highway/33% city

6. Whether your car has any known problems

None that I'm aware of, runs great.

Hey guys, looking for suggestions on oil. I've been running conventional Castrol and a Wix filter and 5,000 oci. Would like to see if there is a better oil out that and would like to extend my oci. I probably drive 9,000-10,000 miles a year.

Thanks

I would use a syn that is easy to find (Castrol Edge, Mobil 1, PP, Synpower, etc) with the Wix and change it once a year.

Welcome to the board!

Sounds like a prime candidate for Mobil 1 EP 5w30 & a Fram Ultra filter for a yearly oil change.

Follow your OLM and keep using Castrol and Wix filters if you are happy. Current PCMO is a more friendly extended fluid vs what GM used to test and program your OLM.

I agree on the mobil ep, mostly highway miles, warm weather and 9k per year! = ep

Thanks for the suggestions so far, where can I read more about the fram ultra on here? I saw it mentioned in one thread. I have always used wix due to believing it is one of the better filters. If there is room for improvement while being rationale (price wise) then I am on board for change.

Thanks for the welcome, looks like there is a lot to learn from this forum.

It is. Use Wix with confidence!

Here's the link to the oil filter section, lots of posts on the Fram Ultra if you flip through the pages. 99% filtering efficiency at 20 microns and built like a brick [censored]!

I'd be careful switching to synthetic on that old truck just from a leak standpoint. You can try it and if no problems, you'd be good for yearly OCI. Personally, I'd be more inclined to go with a high quality 5w30 blend like Pennzoil Gold that meets Dexos. That should not have any leak issues and also be good for a yearly OCI. Keep it topped off regardless.

Nobody recommending Pennzoil Ultra Platinum anymore? I went to it for similar film strength to Mobil 1 EP, and maybe better detergent/dispercency.

And SOPUS is notably pricing the PurePlus oils ~ 10% lower than Mobil 1.......Platinum vs. M1 and Ultra vs. Mobil 1 EP.

I've been please with PU so far - got rid of my HEMI ticking noise, and sure it will promote cleanliness of piston ring packs.

Id keep doing what you are doing.

On the Mobil1 rebate, I am not too sure you can get the oils from just anywhere......you may want to investigate before buying stock and expecting profit.

I've have pretty much the same truck only with the 5.3 and I run PYB 10w30 during the summer with a Wix filter and go until the OLM goes off. I switched from Pennzoil Platinum after running it for over 100k and noticed my truck seemed quieter with the conventional back in it. I originally switched because I thought the synthetic would quiet my piston slap more and found out conventional did a better of doing that.

Around $25 per OCI is a good deal for my preferences. Being in the south, a thicker viscosity would be nice.

I see no reason to change, but if you want to stretch the drains to around once a year I think that Castrol Edge in either Gold or Black bottle would do well. Castrol brought you this far, so any switch now? I'd also stick with the Wix filter.

I actually run 10w30. Didn't want to get crucified for not running what the spec is, haha. Maybe I should do an analysis on my current oil and go from there. You guys are right, my current oil change has done me very well. I try to treat her right because she has treated me right.
