good afternoon fellas. i am in charge of keeping our church van clicking along as far as routine and non routine maintenance. the van is a 2003 gmc savanna 3500 with the 6.0 liter engine in it and it has aPennzoil Platinumrox. 120,000 miles on it. last oil change i used Pennzoil Conventional and a purolator classic filter. i am looking to do some extended oil change intervals on this beast. i was thinking maybe Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 with a purolator pure one filter and maybe trying 8-10,000 mile oci. my question is if i use a pure one with that long of a oci will it fill up with crud or deposits or whatever and go into by pass mode or would the classic be a better solution due to the less restrictive nature of its filtration?
thanks,

I wouldn't do any extended OCI until you do a used oil analysis to make sure the engine isn't hard on the oil and/or the engine doesn't already have a slight problem that would cause an extended OCI to be disastrous such as coolant leaking into the oil or fuel dilution.

Also what is the driving patterns for this truck and the climate like year round and the annual mileage?

The 6.0 is a rock solid engine. If it were me I would use Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra and a pure one filter and do a used oil analysis at 7500 then go from there.

I think ProStreetCamaro is right on. You'll have a decent synthetic oil in there , a good filter and the right miles. I wouldn't go over 7500 miles not knowing the condition of the engine.

thanks for the input fellas. i and my wifey are the youth leaders in our small church which entails that i also got drafted into the picking up of kids and the maintenance of the van. we have had it for maybe a little over a year and it had probably 110,000 on the clock when we purchased it. the oil has been changed twice since we aquired it. first oil change, please don't flame me,was @ the local shell quikie lube with formula shell and whatever filter they use and the last oc was a little more thoughtful,Pennzoil conventional with a purolator classic filter. i hate to say it but this oc is close to 7,000 on Pennzoil conventional. i know i need to get it done,or do it myself, but time constraints. that is why i wanted to go with a synthetic that if i did slip and go over my oci it wouldn't be a biggie. as far as the mileage on wednesdays and sundays it gets driven pretty hard with a mix of 70/30 highway/city. i know it is pretty good shape as it doesn't use any oil. gas mileage sux but what do you expect with a 16 passenger van with a 6.0 engine lol!
thanks,
whitearrow

No issues with the yellow P1 it's fully capable of 8-10K or whatever the OCI is,i was told this by a Purolator tech, there a quality filter.

run the Pennzoil Platinum or M1 and don't look back that 6.0 will out live you!!

Church van should have run a bell, stop and go driving ? lots of idling ? Just from the church van stuff have been around it would deem it severe, notice mobil 1 deems taxi use viod in the EP series. I would keep it on conventional if your already pushing 7k on Pennzoil conventional well that's enough said !! The cheaper way out will be a conventional.... Maybe run a used oil analysis to establish a OCI go from that point before you dive into synthetics.

i hear ya daman! it wouldn't be so bad though except leaving my family behind. i would have it way better on the other side than i do here, although i have been blessed here also. ain't nothing here gonna compare to heaven my brothers!!!

I feel the exact same way.

so y'all don't think that the pure one will get blocked any quicker than the classic due to its better filtration? thats my only concern as of right now.

i think if you are concerned there is that much crud in the engine, you should do a short OCI with something like marvel mystery oil (MMO) in with the normal oil to help clean out the deposits and essentially flush the heck out of it

or you could also just replace the filter halfway through the OCI, cut it open and see whats inside.

Use 1 Qt of MMO and the rest a 15W40 HDEO like Chevron Delo, Mobil Delvac 1300 or Rotella T to clean it up. That will help make up for the thinning from the MMO.

One thing you have to take into consideration is how hard oil is worked. The following formula is very conservative but a good starting point.

Using Ted's old Formula:
(TBNx10) x Oil Capacity x MPG x Engine Load Factor
60 (6.0 TBN Conventional) x 6 x 10 x 1.22 (Cubic Inches / BHP)
4,392 Miles for a 300 bhp 6.0L that gets 10 mpg and holds 6.0 Qt.

60 x 4.4 x 30 x 0.786
6,225 Miles for a 140 bhp 1.8L that gets 30 mpg and holds 4.4 Qt.

Ditto on the 6.0 being rock soild. Any syn you want with a good filter will do 7500 miles/1 year with little sweat. I'd worry about the rest of the van (transmission, electronics, etc) before I worried about the engine. That's one of the few things GM got right.

NO...

That filter is 99% @ 20 micron, thats a great spec and will do a fine job cleaning your oil and flow fine no issues run it with confidence WA.

if it makes you feel better search for a over sized for this application i think there is one just not sure off hand.
