Need oil suggestions

I second the factory recommended 10k per change. Use a synthetic for peace of mind and might as well change the filter. At 420 miles per week that would only be twice a year. Not breaking the bank but being pretty economical.

PP= $22X2 P1= $6.50X2

$57 + tax for a year's worth of oil changes. A dollar a week. Throw in a timing belt change and you're just about done besides other simple, seldom things.

Thanks guys for the additional suggestions, will definitely change what I have been doing by using a differnt oil and extending it's use. Sent my oil in to be tested, looking forward to getting the test results back next week.

Thanks again,
Howard

You don't need to look down on drivers with lesser cars than yours. The OP usage of Redline oil for daily commute and have fairly short OCI is a waste of great oil, but saying a Civic is an economy car therefore should use cheap Walmart oil is not very nice to a new member.

I have a car, Honda S2000, that can get some benefit with Redline, but since I don't track my car so that it doesn't see the 8000 RPM very often, therefore I use conventional 10w30 most of the times.

Back to the topic, since your commute is very easy on oil you could use PP or any other synthetic with good filter like PureOne and have 10k OCI without worrying. If I was in your shoos I would change oil filter at every other oil change per Honda recommendation.

Appreciate the help....as a newbie trying to understand what is the best process to use and that is cost effective I was taken back by the attack.......thought it would come 6-12 months down the line......lol

Is it ever a regular practice to empty out the oil, change the filter, reuse the oil and top off whatever is lost......or is considered a no-no?

Howard

What makes you think it's bypassing and why? Capacity is the same across filters of the same size. Unless you cut some filters open, you have no idea whatthe loading is like. You have it backwards too, the filter gets changed every other oil change.

The people telling you that conventional oil is fine and/or Redline is the wrong oil for the application (no API spec), they are right, so try not to be so snippy with them. There is a fine UOA from a Civic on Havoline at 10k miles posted, that would be something to familliarize yourself with before making your next uninformed oil decision.

To tell you the truth I do not know the filter is bypassing. I'm just asking questions to get some baseline on the best process to use. And my questions are coming from past posts that I have read and just want to clarify. So I read a post that stated oil filters begin to bypass 5,000 miles. Regarding your other comment "try not to be so snippy with them", you really can't use "them" as it was just one member. If you read the thread I thanked members twice who have offered suggestions to help me. I can't help it if one member doesn't like my car, if he chips in $10,000-$15,000 for better car I would be happy to buy it. But at this point in time putting 2 kids through college is far and away more important to me than buying a status car, I rather buy a functional car that traditionally is know to have a good engine.

Thanks,
Howard

Howard - Just my 2 cents, I don't think a filter is going to be loaded in 5,000 miles unless your engine is running incorrectly or it's pretty dirty. I've cut open filters that were in use for 5,000 miles and you couldn't even see any debris in the pleats.

Okay, with that being said what is the correct process? If I use one of the suggested oils in this thread for 7,500-10,000 miles what am I to do through that time period, as I have read and heard various ideas.

1. Do I leave both oil and filter in for that time period? Have a test done and see how both performed.
2. Do I leave the filter but change the oil around mid-way?
3. Do I leave the oil in the pan and change the filter mid-way and then top off?

If I could just get this down pat I think most of my naive questions would be limited.

If I were you, I would do step 1 but make sure it's a high quality oil (Mobil 1, Castrol Edge, etc.) and high quality filter with a silicone ADBV (such as a Mobil 1, PureONE, Royal Purple, K&N, Napa Gold/Wix, etc.) and as a general rule of thumb, when you're doing extended intervals, get a used oil analysis to make sure it's safe to go that long and what your interval should be.

I have cut open a bunch of lower end filters with nitrile ADBV's after running them 3 months. The media is often quite black. Both soot and finely divided metals are black. Even though I seldom see much obvious crud on the filter, it is possible the pores are clogged with particles at the lower end of visibility. I do know old oil doesn't want to flow out through the media or the ABDV. I thingk I have let even Fram filters set for a week in the drain pan, and still had to drill a hole in the shell to let the oil out.

All the ADBV's were still nice and flexible even cold.

Howard - Most members on this board are very helpfull but once in a while you'll see some are not so nice, my advice to you is ignore those negative comments.

If I was you I would look at the sub-forum "Rebate, Sale ..." near the end of the forum, you'll find great oil/filter sale and rebate several times a year.

Since Honda engines are very easy on oil and your commute is mostly highway and good long distance, any conventional oil can easily afford 7-8k miles OCI and any synthetic can have more than 10k miles OCI. Mobil 1 Extended Performance can be used for up to 15k miles or more OCI in your case. If you stay with conventional I would change oil filter every otheroil change, if you go with Mobil 1 Extended Performance than change oil filter every time you change oil at 15k miles or more.

Wow.....that's amazing I can go 15k with an oil, be it synthetic or conventional.....that more than doubles my OCI....thanks for the help, appreciate all the advice.
