I have a Fridgedaire front load washer.
I is growing mold in the rubber ring gasket at the door.
I have been trying to get the manufacturer to fix it.

Have you made a decision as to which way you want to go ?
I also wanted to point out that my Samsung is also direct drive, with a stainless steel drum.

Let us know,
Justin

Do you wipe out the gasket after every load, and leave the door open ? This is the only way to prevent mold.

I do it at the end of every wash, It's been a year and a half, I have ZERO MOLD, and ZERO ODORS.

It also helps that my machine has 3 drain holes in the door gasket.

I see $2000 being a pretty common range for matching washer/dryer combos. How can anyone spend this kind of money?

I just don't get it. You guys must have some great jobs.

I was lucky enough to purchase a new Whirlpool washer/dryer combo a few years ago for around $600 total. They replaced my previous Whirlpool units that lasted 23 years.

Glad I saw this thread as I am in the market for a W/D combo and the Sammys seem to have some good reviews, been looking at Lowes and the wifey likes em, and specials on them ?

I just bought a samsung in july to replace to my [censored] sears calypso. We love it. I give it 2 thumbs up. When i was reading reviews- samsung seemed to have the lowest amount of complaints. We bought it a lowes and customer service was great. Delivery guys were really nice and they said they had yet to see one go back compared to the other brands.

We did not buy the matching dryer as our dryer is still working but when it dies- i plan on getting the matching dryer and stacking it.

I bought an LG front loader from Home Depot about 6 months ago after our Kenmore/Frigidaire front loader died from the same problem as the OP's.

Very happy with the new washer. It's direct drive, quiet, and handles big loads without any problems. Best thing about it was that with the rebates from our water district and the gas/electricity utility, it cost less than $350.

I finally bought the LG 3.5 cu.ft. model# WM2010CW at Home Depot. They match Best Buy sale price of $510 and they also accept Lowe's 10% discount coupon in the address change kit I got at the Post Office on Saturday.

The washer cost is $459 + 8.75% Tax - $35 instant rebate from Southern California Gas Company so that the cost for now is $464, but I will get back $250 rebate from water company to make final cost of only $214, which is very good deal for a good size front load washer.

I had 3.0 cu. ft. Frigidaire for 12 years and I think that it is large and can handle more cloths than my dryer can dry in 1 load, i.e., I had to divide 1 full load of wash to two loads for the dryer. I was very happy with Frigidaire font load washer until it broke last week, it wash all cloths very well and fairly quiet. When I found on internet about the design flaw of the spider arm of the stainless inner tube, I have to buy other name and Samsung and LG are two of the more reliable machines.

This LG is almost 20% larger than my old one and it is more than my family needs most of the times. If my family need larger washer, then I would pick Samsung because they only have 4.0 cu. ft. or larger.

Malo, get the address change kit at Post Office for the Lowe's %10 discount coupon, also print the Samsung price on sale from BestBuy.com to have Lowe's match it.

Been leaving the door open.
But it keeps coming back.

You need to wipe out the boot also, as there is a small pool of water in the bottom of the boot. Just leaving the door open is not enough. This is a common problem on ALL front loaders, regardless of brand or model. But if you dry it out after every load, AND leave the door open you will be ok.

This is what I'd do:
Clean your boot seal with a bleach and water solution to remove and kill the mold. Next run a HOT wash cycle with the bleach despenser full to the max line. Do this with NO clothes in the washer. If your washer has a sanitize cycle I would use it for this procedure. You can also use dish washer detergent for this procedure if you want.

Once this is done, you should be all set. Then just wipe the boot, and glass after EVERY load (Unless you are running another immeadiately after). Then leave the door open to dry and all will be good.

This procedure worked on my friends Maytag Neptune that are notorious for mold build up in the rubber boot seal.

Let us know how you make out,
Justin

HTSS_TR, did you make a decision on a washer yet ?

, Never thought I'd like doing laundry, but it's better than doing the dishes.
I've been Mr. Mom for the last 6 months while I've been out of work.
I researched for a couple of months, and I had it down between the LG's and the Samsung. Ultimately it came down to value for the money, the Samsung had features that the LG couldn't match. And they were cheaper than the LG's at the time.

Verizon's ruined LG in my eyes, when the time comes for me to buy a washer/dryer when I move out on my own I won't buy LG.

Yes sir the Rolls Royce of washing machines.

Hate to drag this subject out of the tombs but I've been looking at the models offered by Sears.
They have front loaders from $500 to $1500.
How high up the ladder to you need to go to get a good machine?

I WAS considering a top loader; the dryer is recent and I'd like them to match somewhat. There are some 'energy star' rated top loaders that I'm leaning toward; any comment on those?

Get a Whirlpool and get it from Lowe's.

We just recently took back a 9 year old fridge from a customer and replaced it with a brand new one, Lowe's will bend over backwards to keep you happy. Don't be afraid to raise your voice if they hesitate.

You contradicted yourself there. In addition, service (or lack thereof) depends upon the management at that store & can't be extrapolated to other stores, possibly even in the same city.
