My new 2012 Accord V6 has almost 4,000 miles on it. Historicaly I dump the factory fill in a new car at 1,000 miles and all my future UOA's showed super low wear and no oil consumption during the life of the engine. I read on here though that Hondas factory fill is a "special" oil that aids in break-in and should be left in till the computer says oil life is a 15%.

My oil is getting very dark and the computer says the oil life is at 70% still. I'm thinking of dumping it and filling it with fresh oil. Will this harm the break in at all or is this a good idea to get some fresh oil in it at this point? Which brings me to my next question. What oil will protect this V6 best? I'm thinking Mobil 1 0w20 might be good? The engine is speced for 0w20 but I have heard in europe they use 5w30's in this engine. What are your thoughts on that idea?

Also are Napa Golds(Wix) filters good for this car or should I stick with Honda filters? Many thanks!

If it where mine i would have changed it already.I would decide oil viscosity depending on the temps where your at.I would try to stick to the thinner oil myself. As far as i know there is no difference in the Napa gold and regular napa unless i am mistaken both are wix made.

I would go ahead and dump it now. Mobil 1 0-20 would be a great oil to use, or Pennzoil Plat/Ultra of the same grade. I would probably do a couple changes of 5-6k miles on it that way, and go from there. If you do all highway, then you'd probably be fine to extend it out farther than that. But generally I like to keep the oil changes "short" for the first 10-20k miles.

I would say the Wix filters would be a good choice, or a PureOne or factory replacement. Any of them should do a good job at keeping things clean.

Go to driveaccord.net and see what they say. They will tell you to leave it in. Most of the owners that have oil burners changed their FF early. Keep it in till at least 6k miles. Then you should be ok.

At 4k, you are good to go -change away!
The Honda initial fill oil is very good, and warnings about leaving it in are for those who immediately change it when they get home, or at low miles.

I don't know how you resisted until now - I would have succumbed at 2-3k.
And don't forget a good filter!

Great choice of oil !! Wix or Purolator filters would work well too .

My 07 V6 Accord likes Mobil 1 5-20 and Napa gold or Pure-one filters, Napa's closer so it normally gets the Napa Filters. At 4,000 miles your past breakin in my opinion.. if it was my car id change the oil..

ive ran
PU
PP
VWB
Valve-Syn

car seemed happy on all of them.

Napa syn 0w20 is available for 3.49 a quart. I would buy a couple of oci worth. I wouldnt change factory fill till at least 30% or less. The new Honda OLM isnt a mileage based application anymore. Honda adds a STRONG dose of moly to their FF.

+1 to that.

Q.

+2 Change it.

I think that at 4k that oil did whatever it was suppose to do so you would be safe to change it. Mobil1 is good stuff and readily available but if in the future you want to extend the OCI out even more than go with AMSOIL they make a good product and filter.

Agreed. If for no other reason than warranty concerns.

Leave it in until the manufacturer says you can replace it.

After that time change when you want within Honda limits.

I would changed the filter at 600 miles, then changed the oil at the first severe interval, 3750 i think for those.

Made me sick to my stomach!!!! I'm leaning on changing it soon because of that thread. My engine is also making a ticking noise that comes and goes. I noticed it a couple weeks about and you can hear it when the engine is hot and if you are in "drive" but not moving. If you put it in "park" it goes away. Shift back to "D" and tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick....just like in this video:

If I drive away slowly you can hear the tick get faster as the RPM's go up. I bought this Accord because of the Accords reputation of being trouble free. I traded in my 2008 Volvo S40 that broke down every week and was a lemon. I truly hope this is not the start of problems! I just got rid of a car with problems!!!!!!!!!!
