My friend has a 1998 Mustang with a V-6 and a 5-speed manual transmission [T5OD 5 SPD......MA]. It shifts very sloppily and causes mis-shift under hard accelerating. This transmission calls for an ATF. The car has 190k miles on it. So we switched out the stock fluid and added in AMSOIL's ATF. He reports back no improvement and says it's in some cases worse now.

I've been doing some reading. In the Royal Purple brochure it lists a Syncromax fluid that is for manual transmissions that call for ATF. So I'm thinking this may be a better fluid. As a side note, Royal Purple claims this is a GL-4 & GL-5 fluid, which gives me thoughts of trying it in my 2009 Mazdaspeed 3. Since it's a GL-4 transmission (6 speed, I think Getrag makes it). Would this fluid work for me as well?

After more research, it seems GM and Pennzoil both make a Synchromesh fluid that is liked by many. Would this be compatible also?

Now I'm reading about this "BG Syncro Shift II" and it has a lot of fans.

Then I look at AMSOIL and see thy have a synchromesh as well.

Anyhow, any advice would be greatly appreciated. We are trying desperately to improve the shifting on this project car of his as this is his and my new "garage queen" that we are working on restoring and making into a sleeper. Just for fun.

P.S. For my 09 MS3 I bought some billet aluminum shifter bushings. This made a very nice difference in the feel of the shifter gates and helped in a big way becoming stuck between gears (in the cusshy part) on super-hard speed shifts. Do they make such a thing for his 99 Mustang? If so, where can we buy them? Thanks!

I've had RP Syncromax in my MTX-75 gearbox for about the last 30k miles. I love it. Shifts feel much smother than when OEM fluid was in.

I would use it in your friends stang with confidence, but with 190k on it and since he noticed no improvement with amsoil, things just maybe tired in that gearbox.

As far as your ms3, I'd check the Mazda boards to see what others have/ haven't had sucess with. I'm sure you're concerned about warranty coverage, too, so you might want to be SURE it meets Mazda specs.

Like I said, though, I love it.

Check the trans and engine mounts on the mustang. As far as shifters for the mustang, MGW was always my fav for a shifter with a cobrabob.com gasket.

His T5 is a very different unit than your MTX-75->(same gearbox that was in the factory {NOT Group A rally} Escort Cossies).

The RP fluid may be just fine in the T5, but it was downright horrid in my T56.
I'm not sure if the T5 has the same composition blocker rings as my T56, but if it does they will NOT be happy with the RP Synchromax.
There must be some similarities between the two since they both spec Dex 3 ATF fluid??

Double check with the owners manuals and cross reference them w/ the specs listed on the RP website. If syncromax meets the OEM specs, go for it. I highly recommend it!

Ive driven pretty much every model of mustang with all different shifters (no v6 though they dont run in the circles i run with) and the MGW was my fav on all transmissions.

On a T-5, I've driven:

1. Pro 5.0
2. MGW
3. Steeda Tri-Ax
4. MAC

My favourite is the Tri-Ax. Best shift feel. I found the MGW to be too "notchy". The Pro 5.0 feels awesome, but has a nylon bushing to wear out, whilst the Tri-Ax doesn't.

Get him to check out the Steeda Tri-Ax.

2 nights ago we ordered the Steeda Billet Aluminum shifter bushing that mounts on the side of the shifter. Hoping that works.

Yeah, he seen the shifter's and wants to get one when he gets some more money for it. Also with the leather thingy that goes around it. But the ATF fluid we put in his transmission, he said his shifting got worse, so we're looking to change the fluid. Royal Purple said their Syncromax is made for manual transmissions that call for ATF so we thought about it. Plus we just added the Royal Purple 75w90 rear differential fluid to his differential. So it will kind of go with that. lol

So I need to find a good fluid. I'm especially curious about the BG II fluid I mentioned above though. I'm scared to tell him to buy another fluid like I did with the AMSOIL ATF and it not work out again. I want to be sure this time it will help matters not make them the same or slightly worse again.

T5's take ATF. I've used Mobil 1 ATF in mine and was always happy with the results.

He will notice the biggest difference with a new shifter. Bar none.
