Hi,
I just spent nearly $1000 to have the diff for my BMW rebuilt. 4.10 LSD from a 325i was used.
It was rebuilt, and I had then ship it to me 2nd day air, or whatever the cheapest expedited method is.
Well, I got it today, and I was very excited. The box was crumpled in a funny way when I got it, and upon opening it, to my dismay, one of the cooling fins on the differential cover was broken off. It was easy to see that it had bent and broke; like it was dropped somewhere during shipping.
So now I have a diff that has a bent rear cover. Great...
I need to get it installed next week. The sender is contacting UPS regarding insurance, etc. I can't send it back for lookover, and unless they send me a new cover, I can't send the cover back. I need the car, and will be away from my mechanic for the next 4 months.
Its a really lousy situation.
My question is, in situations like these, where something is damaged, but mission-critical, and must be put into use, how does it usually work for submitting a claim? If, for example, I know that a new cover will cost $199, can I or the shipper put in a claim for $199, since a replacement would cost that, and then get paid for the damage, without sending the broken part to the insurance company?
What would be required? A picure? A visit to my local UPS location? I have the diff and the broken part; its quite clear that it bent nd broke in shipping.
I want to make a claim so that I can get a new cover and have it installed at little or no cost to me. It wasnt the place that I bought it from's fault, it appears to be UPS's fault, so someone should pay for damage, at least up to the extent of the insurance policy.
Anyway, Im trying to get a feel for whats the best way to deal with this, how I can get it handled the fastest, and what to expect. Of course, next tuesday or so, the diff needs to get installed into the car, bent fins or not. If the bent fins go on the car, the other cover will need to be obtained immedaitely, and then repair cost will need to be paid as soon as its convenient to me to have done.
WHat should I do to get most satisfaction? Any advice? Ive already called the company that I bought the new diff from, and theyre seeing what they can do, but I want to be prepared so that I can get this taken care of.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!
JMH
P.S. If I buy a replacement cover from my pocket from my local parts guy, and then pay to have it replaced in advance of any claims, etc., what are my chances of seeing some money back for the damage?
