'98 Audi 2.8 30V V6 with approx 110,300 miles.

I have 0w40 mobil 1 in there right now, ran GC prior to that and mobil 1 10w30 twice before that. I need to change out the oil, its going on 10,300mi+ on the 0w40 with about 1.5 qts of makeup so far.

The 30V 2.8 is known to drink a little oil; it used about the same on both GC and the 0w40 (about 1.5 quarts over 10,000 miles, not too bad IMO).

I've narrowed my oil choices to GC, 0w40 Mobil 1, or 5w40 Mobil 1. All three are readily availible to me, with the Mobil 1 oils being the cheapest ($3.38/qt). My thought in going with the 5w40 is that it'd possibly burn less oil.

Thanks in advance for any input, and have a safe and happy new years.

The amount of oil the engine is using (beyond normal) is insignificant. Its is a normal product of the internal combustion. I would use what oil you feel best with.

Your car requires oil with VWAG 502.00 approval. That eliminates Mobil 1 5W-40.

In your case I would use a "euro" oil:

Mobil 1 0W-40
GC 0W-30
Valvoline 5W-40 (PepBoys)
Castrol 5W-40 (NAPA)
Valvoline MaxLife Syn 5w30/10W-30 (WalMart)

If you'd like to reduce the consumption (which does not seem excessive, BTW,) pick an oil with the lowest NOACK, the highest flash and the narrowest visc spread. I would probably use Valvoline MaxLife Syn 10w30 in your case.

Since the car is beyond its warranty period (It is, right!?), I'd have no concerns using Mobil 1 5W-40. Though it's not a VW502 spec oil, it does far exceed the minimum HTHS required, and sulfated ash content is below the limit set by VW502. At least I use Mobil 1 5W-40 in my 2.8 12 valve Audi motor, and the engine seems to like it. Consumption is way less than with Mobil 1 0W-40, and noise levels are lower. After almost 8k miles, the oil looks still very clean.

yes, of course the car is beyond its warranty.

i'm leaning towards the mobil 1 5w40. Its a great oil in my opinion; its always good to try somethign new as well. GC and mobil 1 0w40 both did well, so i would expect the 5w40 to do just as well.
