Beware of any tool that requires a subscription to function. I've seen plenty of tools that have limited updates (1,2,3 years) but some of them will LOOSE FUNCTIONS if you do not have a paid subscription.
Need a bidirectional scan tool with no paywall updates.

The problem is there's no scanner that's below ~450-500$ that can do "full bi-directional" stuff - ECU coding/rewriting + Activation tests + special functions for all the brands and models without charging a subscription/update $$$. A lot of newer models require newer CAN-FD, DoIP, Secure gateway, J2534 programmers etc.. depending on manufacturer and model. Key/TPMS programming additional.
The closest imo is the launch x431 series, where after the intial update time expiry period of 2yr or whatever, The scanner still works. You just don't get updates. Unless something changed recently. If you want cheapest entry price and full bidirectional control, Thinkdiag 2 is good, but if you don't pay yearly fee, the scanner stops working completely.
There are a lot of other alternatives like AUTEL, TOPDON, etc.. It's just wild west out there.
IMO, partial bi-directional like test activation / special functions are enough for most DIY folks to repair stuff. ECU coding is necessary for a lot of euro brands to unlock new options/features. Please check the supported coverage of your tool of choice before purchasing!
Also, if you plan on ecu coding, get a high amperage charger (atleast 60 amps) to not brick the ECUs due to voltage sag.

So then you would get the NT710 for say Honda, how old will it go to? 2009 or ? And its go outa the box no clubs to join, that needs all your info to work?
Usually it works for all models of all years for the purchased brand (unless the latest models need different protocols or they are locked)
I bought NT530 a while back for Porsche for 981 for 140$. (It supported all models except the latest models - 992, latest cayenne, etc. where they require online programming). Later purchased Honda & Hyundai for 40$ & 60$ respectively. Worked great and showed me all the info for 2016 Acura TLX and 2023 Hyundai Elantra N.

Honda includes most models. (I don't see the latest passport or prologue). If your car is ~2023-2009, chances are they are supported.

Thanks, this is helpful but I wish there was a clear chart from each "mfg" of these tools to help us understand what each model does / does NOT do. The nt710 does look interesting, I'm looking into how much it'll cost to give it a test drive.

The 5.5" screen is definitely a bit limiting but maybe it's just enough to get most of what I need done.
Please check the diagnostic coverage list by product, brand and model. Check the number of records and type of them.

I have the NT710, I like it. I have the Honda and Toyota software. Has free updates and is bi-directional, just check the website to make sure it has what you need.

I have the NT510 Elite w/Mercedes & BMW software. It is very useful, east to use, and no charge forever updates.
Could probably have been made a little more intuitive or user friendly, but it doesn't take long to figure it out.

Keep the reviews coming as I'm in the market to update my scan tool. My old AutoEnginuity PC based one doesn't have the best bi directional capabilities like EPS servicing for my late model GM's. It has crank relearn and helped me with built in MAP and MAF tests in the past on a '09 and '11 GM but no EPS functions even after updating for my '23.
If you wait a few months there will probably be a "new" batch of scanners out as the old batch inventory sells out. I've seen this happen several times. The "new" units may or may not be better than the last ones.
I noticed the Xtool A30 Pro looked interesting but seems it's mostly sold out so I may have to wait to compare it's replacement. What a game.

In my shopping a tool that is CAN FD capable is a must so I've read. GM '20 and newer are CAN FD and my fleet it all GM.
