No. DVD is 480i.

Most players upconvert the picture to 1080 so it looks better than it ever did on CRT. If you lack this feature in DVD player the 480i never looks great on a HDTV optimized for 1080/720.

I really dislike my 40" Bravia LCD sitting 14' back. Too small. Currently during a kitchen reno 6' back wonderful!

Thanks all. Leaning towards that 42" Bravia at this point. Too bad the BestBuy promo has ended as it would have been convenient to pick it up directly in store. May have to order from Amazon instead.

Ended up ordering the bravia 42ex440 since Amazon has it now at a good price. The reviews I've read praise it for uniform backlighting. On the other hand, Samsung's backlighting is a hit or miss.

Looks like a nice choice.

The Samsungs, except for their high priced sets, seem to still have problems with the edge LED lit ones. The back LED lit ones are good. My parents got one of those (forget the model) six months ago and it is a nice set. Maybe 3" thick instead of 1" on the side lit ones. The extra width allows for a little better speakers, too, which matters if you mostly listen to the tv through the tv speakers.

My parents are looking for another tv about 40 or so inches in the next month, and a 32", both for the cabin. I'll keep these two in mind when I go to help them out in looking.

I have a Panasonic 42 Plasma currently. plasma does produce more natural color, better with fast action, and appears to be far better with non HD content

Can these still be had? I don't see 42" Panasonics anymore.

Where did you see this TV?

Went to my sisters yesterday. She had a new Vizio 1080P 42" LCD. I was not a big Vizio fan in the past, but to my eyes it was the best picture I've ever seen on any TV. And I'm a Sony loyalist. She had Verizon High def. We were watching some Christmas special with a guy named Buble. It was like looking into a fish tank. 3 dimensional. Depth. Color and sharpness was remarkable. My next TV will definitely be a Vizio.

About 4 years ago, give or take, our TV went on the blink and I went to WM and bought a Vizio. At the time it was a fairly new name, and not knowing anything about Vizio, my attitude was that I'd tolerate it for a year or so and then, if it was still working, upgrade it to something else. The first time I watched it I was really impressed and we are still using it today. When it comes time to compare TV sets for the next purchase, Vizio will definitely be on the list.

(no such thing as a 'LED TV')

Au contraire...

Yeah, but there aren't any on the market, LOL.

From your link:

Both LG and Samsung are expected to launch 55" OLED TVs in 2012. These TVs are exciting, but we have to remember that the price will be quite high (some estimate it to be $8,000), and they will only be produced in small quantities (tens of thousands of units per month).

Hopefully the market reaction to these new premium TVs will be good, and both Samsung and LG will increase capacity and start real mass production which will bring the cost down dramatically. This is expected to happen during 2013-2014. Other companies (such as AU Optronics, Panasonic, Sony and others) are expected to enter the OLED TV market too in the coming years.

Here's for an awesome 2013. Hopefully this year we'll actually see OLED TV and flexible OLED launches... May you all enjoy the holidays!

Current, widely available LED TV's are just LED back-lit LCD's. The use of the term LED was to make them sound new and different from their fluorescent-lit LCD cousins.

Overkill, there are some on the market, but they are prohibitively expensive for those of us with normal incomes. The prices will come down, though. Plasma and LCD were both outrageously expensive for a good while. At one point, if you went any larger than 32" you would have needed to go plasma due to the cost of larger LCD's. The OLED TV's may eventually supplant both due to low power consumption, long life, light weight, etc.

The promise that OLED offers, eventually, is that the actual "screen" is just a thin layer of plastic film with the LED's integrated. I've been a reader of Popular Mechanics for years and the future holds "TV's" that can be purchased in poster tubes, unrolled, and mounted on the wall with little fuss.

Pretty cool, if you ask me. That could make projectors obsolete for the home and make it affordable and easy for anyone to have a home theater.

Yes, I actually remember reading an article on that myself a few years back, the promise is a fantastic one and I look forward to it myself.

My point was simply that while 97tbird is "wrong" with respect to OLED's, he's pretty much right when it comes to any television we'd be discussing on here

I know. LOL. I read about the OLED's recently and just wanted to throw that out there. I have a Vizio 32" that I bought in 2007 for $600. The same TV now costs barely over $200 with the 1080p version costing $300. My understanding is - and don't take this as gospel - that you can't really see a difference between 720 and 1080 on anything smaller than a 42" TV. I don't know where this thing about cable and satellite only providing 720p came from because I have Dish Network and my TV itself shows the incoming signal to be 1080 even though it can only display in 720.

What I REALLY want is a WiFi connected TV so it can double as a web browser.

Unless you get a dedicated keyboard for it as well, this would be a major PITA. Typing things with a TV remote is not much fun.

^Correct. I would want a wireless keyboard to use with it. Agreed that it would be a complete PITA without one.

I do have a tablet now which provides me with pretty much what I wanted - to be able to check web sites while in the living room. So, the internet capable TV can wait for a while.

Just got my parents (for Christmas) a 40" RCA 1080p and plenty of hookups.....all for $299 at Walmart. You have to buy it online but free delivery to store or your house.

It was exactly what they were looking for..a great picture, easy to use and no unneeded stuff.

I just checked the website and that particular TV is not showing anymore but there are similar other deals.

So...you ordered the Bravia on 12/3, but I haven't seen a post saying it was received/like it/don't like it. Is there a post that I missed?
