There has been some discussion of how high a Viscosity Index (VI) you can get from a "neat" synthetic basestock blend....

Amsoil has recently re-formulated their straight 30wt diesel oil (ACD) as an SAE 10w30, without the use of polymeric thickeners. It has the following high/low temp viscometrics:

Vis @ 100C, 10.9 cst
Vis @ 40C, 71, Cst
VI, 141
CCS viscosity @ -25C/-13F, 5200 Centipoise
FP, +450F
PP, -38F
Noack Volatility, 6.3%

This oil sells for the same price as the Amsoil 15w40. So that's what they are able to do for about $22.00/gallon. The highest VI I've seen for a PAO basestock is about 145 (from Chevron), so this makes some technical sense.

Note to Pablo and Mike: The spec sheet for this new oil is listed in the dealer section of the Amsoil website ...

I remember looking at Schaeffers synthetic straight 30w and it also met the 10w30 spread based on it's viscosity specs. I suspect that this is common for a true POA or POE. In fact Red line 30w racing oil also carries the 10w30 spec.

Using Mobil PAO basestocks:
code:

80% SHF-61/63 5.8cSt @100C 31cSt @40C VI 138 PP -57C

20% SuperSyn™ 2150 150cSt @100C 1500cSt @40C VI 218 PP -33C

Would get you:
code:

11.1cSt @100C 67.3cSt @40C VI 157

So a 10w30 with no VII should be entirely doable.
