There has been some discussion of how high a Viscosity Index (VI) you can get from a "neat" synthetic basestock blend....
Amsoil has recently re-formulated their straight 30wt diesel oil (ACD) as an SAE 10w30, without the use of polymeric thickeners. It has the following high/low temp viscometrics:
Vis @ 100C, 10.9 cst
Vis @ 40C, 71, Cst
VI, 141
CCS viscosity @ -25C/-13F, 5200 Centipoise
FP, +450F
PP, -38F
Noack Volatility, 6.3%
This oil sells for the same price as the Amsoil 15w40. So that's what they are able to do for about $22.00/gallon. The highest VI I've seen for a PAO basestock is about 145 (from Chevron), so this makes some technical sense.
Note to Pablo and Mike: The spec sheet for this new oil is listed in the dealer section of the Amsoil website ...
