Wasn't that due to Ford not selling enough of them in cars to the public...back when NASCAR actually had some form of "stock car" in their races.

It was not unusual for car companies to make small runs of engine /car combinations to qualify to race. If my recollection is correct in some organizations as low as 50 vehicles had to me made. Aluminum front end Galaxies, Ford Thunderbolts. Aluminum front end Mopars. Glass hood vehicles..the list of special "production" race cars is pretty long.

Concerning the "cammer"...If it was just about production numbers I am sure Ford would have made whatever number of vehicles necessary. It was new technology for Detroit/Nascar and would have opened up a costly can of development worms if left to race. Also HP and speed were ahead of the race car technology so safety might have also come into play?

In any event it was a grand motor and one of the best looking ever made.

Very nice! I remember the days when we actually used production sheet metal to build the bodies of the cars. I still have a scar from the edge of the stamping from a 1988 Olds Cutlass hood.
