Napa Silver or Supertech oil filter?

SayJac and krismoriah72, appreciate your detailed comments. Looks like I will stick to the Napa Silver I just picked up for now.
For the next OCI, I'll keep an eye on the semi annual sale. If not, ST will go on my next change due to proximity and it being cheaper than the Silver.

I am unable to find the OE Toyota filter for less than $7.24. At which price, my understanding from reading old threads is either Bosch or Napa Gold would be the picks. Would you happen to know where I can get the OE filter below $5?

It all depends on the application for the supertech filter. Most use fiber end caps but some still use metal end caps and center tubes

Question about oil filter choice: which one of the above would you pick? I used to use Fram orange can, until I had 2 instances of start up noise, especially when cold outside.

Wait a minute! Even though I'm not a faithful fan of Fram. I must let you know that improvements were made to it. The Orange Can now wears a silicone ADBV (no more nitrile) and odds are, it will be silent at startup now.

Also, it and the Supertech does not wear any cardboard. Anyone here that says that doesn't know squat about filters. It's a fiber resin that has held up so well, that no complaints or pics of it coming apart exist here at this Oil Filters Room (that I know of anyways)..

My Toyota Stealership has monthly specials they pretty regularly have the spin on filters for my model Corolla for $4 each.
I just used my last Bosch Premium that I had but they are on Rockauto currently for $4 each and are 99% at 20 Microns.

Curios what the Napa Silver filter application number you purchased?

Greensboro, NC

I don't know which filter you use. That could affect the price as well.

Call some Toyota and Lexus dealerships and ask them how many you have to purchase to get the best price. I may be getting a super deal.

Amazon has some great deals as well. Just make sure you are getting them from a dealer.

Below is a copy of an email I sent last week. I have removed the names to protect the innocent.
Read it from the bottom up.

$5.38 each including tax and a drain plug washer.

Funny guy. Well, how much is one?

No, no, no … you don't get it. The idea here is to buy a 20k filter and run it 5k … or buy a 10k filter and run it 30k with 20w60 oil …

Huh? I don't believe I'm looking to get a super long OCI out of the cheapest oil filter I can get my hands on a la UTube.

Interesting. Perhaps I got an older batch of parts. Those were in Feb/Mar 2019, so not terribly long ago IMO.

Additionally, I used a tough guard on my other vehicle (oil change was done by me in end Oct. 2019) and that has the start up "roar" on cold days. Hence my hesitance to use Fram again.

Were the design updates very recent?

I'm using the 90915-yzzf1. I can get a case of 10 for less than $5, but a little excessive for me. I go through about 4 oil changes a year.

Is the Toyota filter a better design than the Fram orange, Napa silver and ST?

I'm not gonna get into that discussion as I am ignorant and have no idea. I just trust OEM.

What's your price for 5?

Well like most of these Corollas, there's two sizes which will generally work. There's the shorty 4967, which appears Silver equivalent you purchased. Then there the longer 4386 which I've not seen anyone post they won't fit. That Napa Silver number 37145, same specs just ~1/2" longer. Either will work, just many prefer the latter if access permits.

I'd add if you have the Vin R engine, according to look up, the 31394 is spec filter.

It's about $6 a pop, which is still double the cost of the basic filters and I guess for a little more I could jump to the Napa Gold, which I believe is a better filter than the OE.

Yep, you are correct. I did get the smaller/Oe sized one. The Napa close to me didn't have the larger sized one.

But good to know the ST part number for the larger one. I'll switch to that the next time I do the oil change. Clearance doesn't seem to be an issue imo

Please list the 3 top things you're looking for in an oil filter. You pretty much get what you pay for in oil filters.

And you're doing no longer than 5000 mile OCIs ?

Don't use the Toyota filter, they have NO endcaps!!!!

And you know what, it is perfectly fine.

Just as fiber endcaps are perfectly fine.

What I find so funny is so many ignorant people throw a fit for "cardboard" end caps, yet not a peep out of them about the "paper" media.
Yup, cellulose media is just that, paper.

My only gripe with Supertech filters are the combo valves. I have no issue with plastic center tubes or fiber endcaps, just don't like those dang combo valves.
Didn't like them on the Wix made ones, don't like them on the Champ made ones. I know they are just fine, but nope, not for my vehicles (although I say that, I did put one on my brother in laws F150).
