Here's another filter run in the '01 Dodge Grand Caravan. Good filter over all but the combo valve makes terrible start up noise. But the filter was definitely doing its job. Still catching sludge bits.

Currently in the Crankcase Pennzoil Conventional 5w30 + Napa ProSelect.
Topped up with PP GTL 5W30 + Hastings LF 115.

Think I'll run the Hastings for 500KM or so.

Is there any benefits of running a filter with a higher bypass pressure? Comparing the Hastings LF115 and LF517, they're the exact same filter but different bypass pressures of 8 PSI and 30PSI. Will the LF517 force oil through and not let it bypass as much?

What makes sludge so gritty?

If you venture too far away from the oem bypass spec (higher) you run the chance of collapsing the media or not getting enough oil flow if the filter is clogged. That's a huge difference in bypass also, going from 8 to maybe 12 psi isn't much but not that high.

Carbon makes it gritty. Burned bits of oil.
Filter looks good.
I've noticed the startup noise with napa silver before also. I think it's a matter of getting what you pay for. Paying a little more for a silicon adv is sometimes worth it.
In short oci vehicles I'm not convinced it is. New fluids with add packs loaded with anti wear additives.

Being sludge a bit it's the detergent and dispersants that will be working on cleaning up this vehicle.

Looks like a quality filter.

That Pennzoil conventional will get it done-the PP is good too, but seems like a waste to have to dump it so quickly. You must have a lot of carbon in that engine, hopefully it disintegrates gradually & doesn't plug your oil pickup. I personally only run the Pro Selects on an application that doesn't need an ADBV or bypass (like my 6.2 or a SBC), I'm not a combo valve fan.

I'll stay away from running a non OEM bypass spec then. I don't want to mess anything up.

Yeah filter not that bad it self, but the real killer part about it is that it has a combo valve. This filter costs me $3.07 but I stepped up to a Hastings LF115 for only 93 cents more. Basically I tried to find the next value filter with a Nitrile ADBV for a little bit more money.

Just oil. I've ran a little seafoam with the oil for awhile back before an oil change. That's about it.

I didn't dump it. Its still in the crankcase. I just topped up with PP GTL 5W30. If you haven't followed my other thread..

This is what it looks like under the valve cover. This was added to the farm about 3 years ago. Since then, it only had about 3K KM put on it. It has 263K KM on it. Never knew it was this bad of a sludge bucket. I would assume somethings blocking the oil pick up. But I'm not going to scratch something that isn't really itching. Other than being a sludgebucket, the van is actually not that bad. It could be daily driver material for sure, but there are too many vehicles to choose from at the farm to drive.

Considering the amount of crud is going down I would leave the filter in it a little longer.

That's not bad-I've had a few neglected motors that were sludged bad enough that the valve covers would fill with oil, couldn't drain back fast enough. Keep doing what you're doing, just get it fully warmed up, it'll clean up eventually.

Well last time I used Seafoam as a quick flush but seemed like that caused the crud to go up. I would expect to see about this much next time I pull it off as well.

Never seen it that bad before. I've been taking it out for 90ish mile round trips when I need to drive out to pick up tractor parts. Might add some MMO to the oil since its about 65% between the low and high marks.

Just change oil at a resonable mileage. Don't add cleaners, I wouldn't want that crud floating around to clog an oil passage. It's not doing any harm by being stuck on the internal parts right now.
