Napa filter lines

Can anybody confirm the differences between Napa silver, gold and platinum oil filters? Based on the website it looks like cellulose, "glass enhanced" cellulose and "synthetic" media respectively. They do not list the ADBV material, though the pictures show a red ADBV on gold and platinum. The Silver I cut open had a black one.

FWIW this is for a 2011 Ford 5.0L application.

The Platinum has horrible efficiency specs (50% @ 20 microns) ... per WIX.

You've got it. I believe the Silvers are about 80% efficiency but I've never seen a published figure. Since they are all cellulose with fairly thin media at that it's likely a reasonable guess IMO. I believe the Golds are around 93% or so IIRC. The Platinums as mentioned I don't think anyone really knows either but Wix insists it is 50%. That is not likely correct but it doesn't inspire much confidence!

I sure like Wix made stuff, the build quality is excellent at all levels but efficiency is not where they get their bragging rights.

If it's wrongly published, then WIX did a great job at messing that spec up. Even the techs at WIX will tell you over the phone it's 50% @ 20 microns. If that's not messed up, I don't know what is. If it's bad information, WIX is gonna have a lot of correcting to do. If that spec is accurate, I don't know why anyone would use them unless they don't know what's going on.

Th bulk of the people walking into NAPA are not informed about filter efficiency. But they feel a platinum MUST be better than a gold.

With the P1 being 99.9% at 20 microns i have a hard time believing the Napa Gold is only 50%...Even the Fram TG is 99%.

Silver uses nitrile adbv and some of the applications use a nitrile combo (adbv/bypass) valve as opposed to separate adbv and metal bypass.

Gold uses silicone adbv and majority metal thread end bypass, with a few dome end bypass.

Platinum uses/advertises silicone adbv and dome end metal bypass.

Yeah I know, I just can't believe it is really THAT bad. If it is they need to try again cause that's an epic fail for a full synthetic filter.

It's not the Gold, it's the Platinum that's 50% @ 20 microns. If you don't believe it, just call Wix Tech Dept and ask what the Wix XP's efficiency is - which is the same filter as the NAPA Platinum.

Dang I hate to hear that. I just bought 5 Napa Platinums's on sale, and I can't return them (cause I wrote on the box with a sharpie).

I don't want to just toss them, either. How bad is it to use them, considering the 50% efficiency?

Wix/Napa Gold is a very well constructed "standard" filter. Here's a good site where you can compare them to other products. The size for my Camaro LS3 is only $4.03+ship. I buy 'em by the case.

It is made to target racers along the lines of K&N, these days Fram Ultra is a steal and is widely available.
