NAPA sells NAPA Mercon V ATF ($4.69 per quart), made by Ashland, PepBoys has Pennzoil (5.40/qt), and AAP has Castrol Mercon V (about $4 with online discount code).

Which one of these fluids is actually better? When it comes to motor oils, I have this subjective belief that Pennzoil is slightly better than Ashland (Valvoline) and Castrol. I have no idea if this also translates to ATF.

I'd probably go with the Castrol just because it's cheaper. As far as better/best, nobody really knows.

I've rebuilt a number of 4R70W's and worked on many others for maintenance and/or mods. I've used almost every brand out there, Castrol, MC, Advance Auto, NAPA, etc. Never an issue with any of them. My only requirement is that I use a specific labeled Merc V fluid, never a one type fits all or "is compatible with" fluid. IMO use whatever your preference for brand or cost may be.

I went through a bunch of threads here a year or two ago for Mercon V fluids for my Ranger. Ended up with the Castrol because it was the cheapest. Everyone said that Mercon V is a pretty tight spec and any of the brands would be fine. My Ranger is shifting fine with the Castrol.

Pennzoil is not specific merc v. So I would pick the valvoline or castrol whichever is cheaper. I have some older 2005 year pennzoil merc v and it is great. But they no longer make it.

Interesting..

I was at a local PepBoys yesterday and saw Pennzoil Mercon V on their shelves. I didn't check the year of make. I guess it's a slow moving product, and this is why they have those old quarts. On a side note, they also had Purolator Premium Plus oil filters, which I understand pretty much no one sells any more (replaced by Classic).

This is from Pennzoil's website...I know they aren't the best at keeping up with things, but...
