Name the engine with this oiling system

I was doing some googling after reading another thread here, and came across the unusually detailed description of a currently in production engine oiling system below. I was unaware of some of the features, such as switching the displacement of the oil pump depending on oil temp and RPM. I'm just curious... who can name the engine family ( though I suppose there may be many that share the features out there):

A chain-driven, vane-type variable displacement oil pump adjusts the flow rate and pressure as commanded by the engine management system, which uses a solenoid to drive the pump into low or high pressure mode. For example, below 3,500 rpm, the pump conserves energy by using low pressure; at speeds over 3,500 rpm, the pump switches to high pressure.

A force balance mechanism inside the oil pump adjusts the size of the pumping chambers to alter oil flow. If the oil is cold, the pump reduces the size of the internal chambers. When the oil is hot and thinner, more oil is needed, and a spring increases the size of the pump chambers. This also saves energy.

The pump is driven at a 1:1 drive ratio; its location under the block is more efficient than an on-crankshaft location. An internal, mechanical ball-and-spring relief valve dumps oil into the sump when needed, for conditions such as a cold start with high engine speed. Both pump and pressure regulation solenoid are non-serviceable.

The engine takes six quarts of oil with a filter change. Traditional, non-synthetic motor oil with an ILSAC standard of GF5 is recommended. The standard change interval, with this oil, is 8,000 miles under normal driving conditions.

The oil pick-up tube is supported at the windage tray. Three oil gallery plugs are in the engine block; oil pressure an be monitored with a scan tool. Oil pressure and temperature sensors are on the oil filter housing assembly, which is mounted on top, between the heads; the oil cooler (a plate-style coolant to oil heat exchanger) is mounted to the oil filter housing as well.

Yes, and yes.

I still think that's a lot of neat tricks with the oiling system to boost efficiency. We've come a long way from the days when the oil pump was just asked to produce a huge surplus of pressure and the excess was dumped back to the pan a bit hotter and a lot more sheared than it started out.

The same or similar variable-displacement pump designs have been used in tractor and earthmover hydrulic systems for many years. Its not a new tech, just a new place to USE the tech to save some energy.

Haha yea till its your puppy to fix when it goes to [censored] after warranty is up,,well i guess the VDP on my log splitter is still working : )
 
It's always a pain to repair something after the warranty is up. Actually, it's pain to repair even in warranty! It shouldn't have broken in the first place is my thinking.
 
The 300 I have as a loaner will display the oil pressure. Indeed, it's somewhere between 35 and 45 psi most of the time, and clearly independent of engine rpm. At idle even. I will check to see what happens above 3,500 rpm.

I see the benefits in this, but question why they decided to push 30+ pounds of oil pressure even at idle. That engine should require no more than 5-10 psi of oil pressure at idle. Any more should be just a waste, except if there's an extenuating circumstance.

It might not actually be pushing that much. My Jeep will pretty much always read in the 30 - 45 psi range, even though the pressure varies between 25 and 60, depending on rpm. It tries to read actual pressure, but is just not very accurate (the gauge does rise with pressure increase, but it doesn't always read real pressure).
 
@30psi at idle is to actuate the VCT (variable cam timing) system. Ford's Modular V8 requires this much oil pressure hot at idle to keep the chains from rattling due to slack in the phasers.

These are actual numbers on the info screen, so I'd hope they're at least somewhat accurate.

Either way, the 3,500 rpm switchover appears to be legit. Below that point (and on hot oil), it sits around 45 psi give or take 5, then jumps to about 85 as soon as you hit 3,500. If you accelerate real slow (but keep the engine speed up there), you can actually feel and hear a change in the engine. Maybe an intake chamber opens up at the same point as well.

I disagree somewhat. The "hydrodymamic wedge" effect between contact surfaces is diminished at low engine speed, so keeping a reliable flood of oil over those parts is very critical.

And as has already been mentioned, there's a lot of other "stuff" being done with oil nowadays, so maintaining pressure is a good thing. I'm sure MultiAir needs consistent oil pressure just as much as VCT does.

I was secretly hoping that info like that would pop out in this thread. ;-) There've got to be a lot of other engines that have most of these features out there, maybe not all as the Pentastar is still fairly cutting-edge. But with each passing month, other new engines will emerge with even more advanced features.

Well, and I was thinking today while driving it...the transmission programming loves to lug this engine around at 1,000 rpm. It takes a fair amount of pedal pressure to pop the cork on it and make it rev. They may have wanted some additional pressure on those bearing surfaces during the engine lugging scenario.

I'm really curious if the oil pressure is different on the 2013s, which are rumored to use 5W-20 instead of 5w30.
