Huh. I've lived in Minnesota my whole life and I've never heard of this. The only abnormal damage seems to come from hitting ice moguls with plastic body parts and, of course, rust.

Rocking a stuck automatic can heat up the transmission quicky. Old car manuals use to say stay in L1 or L2 in the snow so if your wheels did spin, the car wouldn't run through the gears and have the wheel doing 70.
When I owned my 125k mile 94sl2 I was traveling down the highway at 55-60 in mist. Well I hit a puddle and next thing I new is I felt a jerk and heard what sounded like something falling apart. Sure was the diff pin blew right out of the transmission along with 6-7 qts of Mobil 1 synthetic transmission fluid. I never spun the tires as I knew about this issue. It was a sad day because I would of had to pay someone to fix it so I let it go for 500$. This was after seeing how high the 1.9L could rev. 9500 rpms is possible with a blown diff and in drive.
The Saturn 1.9 DOHC loves to rev.
I often shift at 6500+ in my SL2 and it couldn't care less. I think a good ITU is good anyways.
