I have a 1998 Honda Civic DX that I bought used a couple months ago with 135k miles. It now has 138k. It had pretty good main records with it and felt pretty confident about it.

It's had a little problems with rough running, nothing major at all...and if I wasn't so anal I would have left it alone.

About a month ago I used 1/2 can of Seafoam through brake booster line and 1/2 in tank. The 1/2 through brake booster produced very little smoke and I figured either it was ok, or I did it too slow. Well last night I ran a full can through the line. I did it a little faster having to throttle up by hand or it would stall. Man at the smoke produced. I took it for a spirited drive afterwords and it smoked for 5-10 minutes. So much that I was embarrassed at all the smoke coming out of it. It finally quite smoking and I came home and changed oil and filter. I've also ran Auto-Rx this change, so this is rinse until the 2nd application of Auto-Rx.

The car ran noticeably better last night after the treatment. It was smoother, quicker acceleration/throttle response, and a nice suprise...quieter.

I've used Seafoam before, but not with any noticeable results.

Just thought I would pass my experience's along. Hopefully I can nurse this Civic along until at least 250k miles.

now take out a spark plug and look inside the cylinder to see how much it really cleaned.

So, half the folks I ask, say all the "smoke" is smoke & mirrors. You might as well use a beer. Seafoam doesn't clean carbon, it just makes things smoke.

The other half claim marked increases in engine idle & response.

Is the truth in the middle>???

the beer folks are right. carbon smokes black.oil smokes blue. so the white smoke is nothing but............seafoam. and after trying it, and looking in the cylinders, it looked like a bunch of coal in there.

Well, drove it around more this evening.

I know alot of people will say everything I "think" I've noticed is all in my head. I am very anal about the way all my stuff runs. I've got good senses and ears. I am telling you this Civic ran better tonight than when I first bought it. The very slight hesitation is gone, smoother acceleration, just a total improvement. Except for the rattle coming from the right rear door that is about to drive me ape-sh*t!!!

Now, this car may blow up tomorrow...and of course I'll be pi**ed. Maybe water, beer or p*ss would have done the same thing...I really don;t care. Main thing is that it is running better.

Also, someone posted in another topic about cleaning the throttle body and idle control valve. Can anyone give me alittle insight on this?

Thanks

there was also another explanation in a post before. by putting seafoam in the gas tank you are in essence boosting the octane which may explain why you feel such a difference and why i dont feel and see one.

I can't verify my Seafoam experience (cause I rarely use it) but I can say with ABSOLUTE certainty that B-12 can make my piston crowns spotless after being completely black and coated with carbon. I will gladly take pics next time I do it. Now, who knows...two days later they may be dirty again.......

I know B12 is a tangent but I just wanted to point out some of these chemicals DO work on combustion chamber deposits.

I simply remove the sparkplugs and pour a cap-full in each cylinder. Then I remove the fuel pump fuse and turn the engine over a few times.

Smokeshow is caused by the seafoam burning up in your exhaust.

When seafoaming, let the vehicle sit overnight prior to going for a ride.
Add a 2nd bottle to the full fuel tank to finish off the cleaning started by the vacuum cleaning.

Also, the seafoam should help with cleaning the intake manifold, intake ports, valves.....even if you don't think that CC carbon hasn't disappeared.

B12 can be fed through the vacuum source also. I'd bet that ANY thin FI cleaner could be used the same way. B12, 3m, Lubegard have kits for the purpose.
