I started my Saturn stone cold and I got a puff of blue smoke after that nothing I would Rev hard let off a few seconds and do it again. Did this for a couple minutes and nothing . So I stopped and pulled the plugs they were all black not oily at all. Just black. My guess was that the soot is from running it cold at redline. Used to I would get a little oil on the plugs doing this. My guess is the fixed orfice pcv has helped. Any thoughts am I right about why the plugs are black? BTW I pulled them yesterday they weren't black that was all warmed up and driven around awhile

You're really really stressing way to much over nothing, bud.

Just drive the car, and keep an eye on the oil level.

These desparate attempts to figure out exactly why you are buring oil are kinda pointless.

The spark plugs are black because they haven't reached their self cleaning temp.

You can pull plugs on a 2016 Mercedes and it will be the same.

That's what I wanted to know I've never pulled them after a car was revved high. And for everyone else I gave it 10 seconds before holding it. It'll be fine Saturn's are tough . Surprisingly I actually mean that the engines are actually stout. OK serious question how long canning expect my cat and o2 sensors to work in this car? It Burns a quart a month probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 miles. That's just 5w30. At that rate how long will the parts last. I dont mind adding oil I do however hate replacing stuff over and over.

Krisz: there's no lesson to be learned. Well besides that Saturn's use oil and there's not much you can do to stop it. Its all just an experiment now. I could care less about oil usage. It would be neat to find a fix or a great help anyway that way it can help other's.

Have you tried a thicker oil yet?

It's not that cold in Missouri, AFAIK - give a 10W-40 or a 15w40 a try.

The rings are shyte, if you can work them free it will burn less oil. It may also have a bad valve guide seal or 2. This happened on my friends 95 DOHC.

Cool-I need a time machine too! To the OP, don't worry, when the engine runs in open loop (before operating temp) it is dumping extra fuel to get the cat to light off, causing the black plugs. I would buy whatever cheap dino I could find on sale and just dump it in there until you can afford another motor or car.

If you keep revving the engine like that when it's cold...then oil consumption won't be a problem you have to worry about any more...

Cold engines run rich - whether carbed or FI.
Do your door locks exhibit a need for more turning torque when cold? This is important.
