My long lost Uncle left me some money

LOL. Official looking leaderhead of a real company, yet he wants you to contact him at a gmail email address........

Bonkers anyone would actually fall for that.

In addition to the general improbability, being postmarked at the wrong location, etc, it has one of the core features of a high grade scam - dubious legality. They get you to do something possibly or actually illegal.

He will probably have you complete an affidavit (ie swear under penalty of perjury) that you're a relative of this (probably) imaginary man. So when he runs off with your money in addition to the embarrassment, you might be a bit reluctant to get the police involved because you might be in trouble too.

Hey, he's my uncle too. He bequeathed to me a few of his monogramed dress shirts. When I received them they were many sizes too small for me to wear. Never met him but he must have been a diminutive fellow.

There are YouTuber's who dedicate their channels to trolling these people. The ones involving scammers out of India are particularly funny.
Yeah and apparently they really don't like it when they are across the street from a police station on Mumbai. A Youtuber recently called the police station and notified them of the nefarious activities across the street.

I knew a gal who was a good person but delusional. She got a letter saying someone left her money in Europe somewhere and to send money or whatever.
Instead she took whatever small money she had and bought a 1-way airline ticket and flew there. "I'm here to collect my money..."
The officials understood what was going on and gave her a room and a return ticket.

These scammers are preying on the disadvantaged.
Just like the lotto. I have never bought a lottery ticket. I can do basic arithmetic.

This reminds of a member on a M/C website I'm a member of, who trolled one of these scammers for weeks. It was beautiful. He played it off as though he was a bit slow, and was having his families Barrister, the esteemed Mr. Perry Mason, handle all arrangements...

The insults from the scammed scammer after weeks of being played, were hilarious.

Oh yeah people get taken all the time, especially elderly ones who might have early signs of dementia/Alzheimer's. I went through this with my late Aunt between 2007 - 2010. She used to get those letters, call me to tell me I might be inheriting more money, and what I could go with it. I did get her to send these mailings to me, and I would toss them. A couple of times she received "legitimate looking" checks, so she deposited them and then would have to pay a bounced check fee. I got her to send me those too since I was on her bank accounts.

I kept telling her that there was a 99.9% chance it was a scam, but she always replied "...but what if it is real? Fortunately she never fell for (as far as I know) ones that asked her to send money to them so she could collect untold riches in cash. She always figured why don't they just deduct that money from the cash I was to receive.

One time she got one check that really looked legitimate, so I called the bank it was drawn upon, and was advised that it was bogus. The bank was some obscure little bank in Oregon if I recall correctly, and they asked me to send them the check so they could investigate it.

My cousin's husband fell for the whole IRS over the phone thing.

Careful.

I made a similar comment on a website one time... A moderator who apparently played the lotto, took offense to my comment, and when I stated it was just my opinion, he edited and deleted my posts to make my comments look worse. Then edited his own posts to sound more reasonable, and then locked the thread...

You don't have to worry about that here.

I too have never bought a lottery ticket. It makes more sense to me to just light the money on fire, at least you get a bit of entertainment from the fire.

I hate it when that happens.
The last time I gambled was 50 years ago; I was with my folks in Vegas and won $100 on a 10 cent slot machine.
I don't even like football game office pools...

My inlaws are smart (kind of) very well meaning people. One of their best friends goes to Atlantic City and wins EVERY time. Bets big money and wins big, rooms comped, high roller etc. This has been going on for over 20 years.
Told them a couple of years ago that their friend is a liar, they told me he is just really smart and has the casinos figured out...I pressed my luck and said why doesnt he just live there and take them for 50k a day? Was told I didnt know him so I was wrong...I said please do not ever invest or give or exchange any money with this person. They both got really quiet really quick. Asked them where he lived, I would get their money back, they were too ashamed to talk the rest of the night. Just hope it was no more than a couple G's...
