tricky part is I'm interested next year 2016, how close can I get?

Subaru Outback except for the the MPG figure (33 highway not 35-40). My dad spent $23k brand new on base model and it does all those things listed above except MPG. The $10k saved over next nearest competitor buys lots of fuel.

I know..it comes darn close..I worry about a Subie lemon and endless hours at the service desk arguing about a bad head.

Which 2016+ Subie is a lemon and what bad heads? You've made your position clear on Subie's as borderline trolling and misinformation.

EVERY car maker has lemons not specific to brand, country of make etc. Just a roll of dice with odds in your favor of getting a decent model.

Majority of vehicles just work fine even the "unreliable" brands for most.

Ford escape is probably pretty close . Good fuel mileage good price. I think they can tow around 2,000 good in snow with awd. And we hardly ever had one in the shop. They also drive well.

Does not drive like a sedan nor meets MPG criteria of OP. Thread is interesting to me as the market is extremely narrow here.

Do you live by Lake Superior?
Not to often WI gets a 10" snowfall. And unless you do live way up north, they start plowing and dumping stupid amounts of salt, about 3 hrs before the storm even starts.

Drop the MPG criteria and you can find a lot of great vehicles. The Ram Eco diesel would do everything on your list but meet the MPG (28mpg) and price point.

I'm betting around September or October you can score a deal pretty close to that on a Ram though. The discount those trucks way down at the end of every year.

25-30 mpg is still pretty good mileage for anything with ground clearance and all-wheel drive.

Your future vehicle will be complicated, regulated, difficult to service and expensive. Simple is not an option. Basic is not an option. We can only hope that China and India will start importing and get through the growing pains quickly. Japan did it. Korea did it quicker and there's hope that China and India will be quicker, yet.

Sounds like you need 2 cars, one that's perfect for towing, having 4x4, and hauling people as well as a cheap reliable commuter car.

Sounds like you need a used FJ Cruiser, 4Runner, Tacoma, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Xterra, etc.

As well as a used Corolla, Civic, Accord, Camry etc.

Both used will be the same price as 1 new Unicorn and they can serve both functions.

Eh? I do get to the U.P. every weekend and travel/work here in S.E. WI. during the week so +30mpg helps doing 35k mi. a yr.

My camp is in a river basin, it's driveway is uphill 200ft then 1/4 mi. uphill asphalt road departing. I bought a sled recently and hope to use it but I know how bad it gets there and home/work is 250 mi. south...in a snow storm that drive is a pia.
towing is no big deal as the boat launch is 1/4 mile away.

I'll look into the Ram, Subie Outback fits the ticket but the history and the heads and CVT... good god there is risk there.

Yes they get over 30mpg saw plenty come in for maintenance getting 35. And drive like a sedan.....somebody want to explain that statement. The escape is a nice driving vehicle. Doesnt drive like a truck or a sports car drives better than a minivan ect. Id say the driving impression is right in line with any sedan like ride that can handle 10 inches of snow.
I mean I want a truck that rides like a vette gets the mileage of a prius and can still tow a boat... all for under x amount of dollars. There has to be reasonable concessions somewhere. The escape to me is perfect for what your saying.

We never saw issues with either really. Both are reliable if you are going to be towing though id opt for the bigger engine but you'll lose a little mileage but you have to realize how much money are you saving between say 30 mpg vs 35 over the course of the year? Is it a huge amount? Probably not. Thats why I said some practical compromises are a must. Obviously if you are towing 2,000 all the time all over the country you'd want a vehicle better suited for towing but if you are only towing modest distances a few times a year a vehicle a little less capable is fine. And if you drive through snow all the time you probably want something more capable and will pay for it at the pump and in the way it drives but if you only travel is snow a few times a year a more refined riding vehicle with better mileage makes more sense.

whats that Jeep like at 80? your dental work at risk?
Rides like a dream. Sometimes I hit 80-85 before I even realize it.

His first req was ultra reliable. I'm a Jeep guy but I can't pitch that.

I sure can. 3 Jeeps have been rock solid for us.

Best option so far

1.) Subaru Outback

2.) Ford Escape 2.0 tow pkg.

3.) Toyota Rave4 XLE
