Well Guys this is my first post and I need alittle reassurance. I was always a 3,000 mile oci guy. Currently I picked up a 93 buick roadmaster with 52,000 miles on her(5.7 tbi l05 engine). PP 5-30wt oil, pure one oil filter, mobil 1 atf, mobil 1 75-90wt rear end oil and a full tune up.Standard plugs, cap and roter, pcv, and the dreaded k&n air filter. Breaking old habits I would like some reassurance that 5000 mile oci with pp 5-30 wt and a pure one is up to the challenge. Also I had one mech who reccomended change filter at 3,000 top off then do 3,000 more before complete oil change. Sounds like hog wash to me, any reason that would be better?

Run 5k and do a uoa for the reassurance. Once you get over that hump you may be happy there or want to get more out of the oil if your equipment and driving habits allow.

I should of said I do about 450 miles a week. About 375 mile are hwy. Its a 70 mile 2 way trip on the hwy to the gf house. City miles are very low. ps. I drive easy, with the 1 a week full throttle hwy burst for fun.

Ken, have you met Auto Union?

Coolman, no problem what so ever, especially since the miles will be mostly highway. As far as the oil filter, Gary Alan, mucho respected guy here has proven with a differential pressure gage, and the original owner of this website showed via NO oil filter on his car, that oil filters can go soooooooooo much longer than the marketing regime will tell you. 20,000 miles would likely be a non issue on an oil filter! 5,000 miles won't even be breaking a sweat.

I do agree in doing a used oil analysis just to see what's going on. If all checks out, you could go to 7500 miles most likely between oil changes and still not be pushing the capability of PP.

Welcome aboard!

Be careful when you extrapolate.

I'd say that a synth and filter will last 5000miles/11weeks no problem.

Back in the 70s/80s, most car manufacturers (in Oz) had 5000km (3000mile) OCIs with filter changes every second oil change (i.e. 6000miles).

Now they do 10-15,000 km oil and filter changes.

Conventional is supposed to be good for 5000 miles these days and Group III synth for 7000 or better. What does your owner's manual say? I bet it already recommends a 5000 mile OCI for your driving conditions. Filter should be good for 5000 to 7000 miles easily.

coolman! I started where you are. I alway did 3,000 OCI. I remain a bit conservative still. However, since you are primarily driving highway miles, 5,000 should be a walk in the park for this oil. Does the Roadmaster have on oil life monitor? It should take you well past 3,000. With the PP I would push on to 5,000. If you have any worries, do the UOA for piece of mind. You do it once and you have an idea of how much farther you could go. And again, welcome.

I was just trying to mitigate his fears of running an oil filter for 5,000 miles, which is in no way going to be an issue. Maybe if it was a Fram though.
