My first defective filter -- Supertech ST6607

I just did an oil change on my sister's boyfriend's Kia Sephia today and as I took the old filter off and went to put the new filter on (a Supertech ST6607) I noticed it wasn't seating properly, I could hear and feel a distinctive metal on metal sound as I felt it tighten, and I knew something wasn't right. I looked down on the cardboard and noticed the gasket had fallen off, before I even put the filter on the car. Last time I use Supertech filters unless I have to, I'll just go with a Purolator next time. Sorry I didn't think to get any pictures, I was in a hurry and had to run up to the store and return it before he had to go to work. It didn't help that it was EXTREMELY busy on the roads and at the store, either. Big hassle for such a little thing.

That's happened to me with various brands, including purolator. It's no big deal. Slip the gasket back into place. It's not glued in or anything, it just sits in the lip that's built into the baseplate.

Agreed. Hardly a "defect."

D'oh, I tried pushing it back in but it just fell back out again. I thought they were supposed to be held into place with adhesive or rivets or something.

I've seen filters that didn't even have gaskets, so now it's SOP to open the box and check before I toss it in the shopping cart.

Nope...usually there are just small crimp spots in the channel that the gasket slips into. Its supposed to be friction-fit into the channel & retained by the crimps. If there was any defect at all, maybe the Super Tech filter lacked crimps or the crimps weren't tight enough to retain the seal.

It's possible, because I tried pushing it back in and it just buckled and fell off again. The replacement filter worked fine though, and the filter was on good and didn't fall off on me before installation.

All of the supertech filters I've used (more than one less than hundred

) all have had the crimp to hold the gasket on.

Take the filter back to Wal-Mart and you'll get another one with no problems. If you don't have the receipt, just go in and buy one, go out and come right back in with the one that you are having problems with.

I've had filters that I bought come out of the box without a gasket (Toyota OEM Denso) and it even had the nice plastic wrap around the gasket area and grease, no o-ring..

Sadly, I bought those online by the case so that filter was used once I took a used o-ring off another filter.

Agree, not a defect in my book either.

I've encountered similar issues with Supertech, Purolator and Wix.

Won't stop me from purchasing more - unless more defects are found. All three have good reputations - plus their pricing remains attractive.

I forgot to bring the receipt with me but they exchanged it anyways, and I finally found the receipt today

By true quality standards, it IS a defect. The gasket is not designed to fall off; it's designed to be retained. Therefore, it is technically a failure.

It's just that such a small problem is usually easier to fix than to replace, so it's rationalized because it's easy to remedy. Happens to all brands at one time or another.

OTOH, it's not a "defect" that would keep me from buying more of them.
