Did you know those P2s live on as fire fighting tankers?

I have seen them on TV as fire fighters several times. Sure brings back fond memories. I was a ADJ3. Had 2nd clas made but couldn't sew the stripe on as I had less than one year left to serve before getting out.
Notice the MAD boom on the tail,Magnetic Air Detection, which is missing on the fire fighting A/C.

WOW! Were you in Nam when two of your planes were shot down in the South China Sea? What a tragedy that was. I believe both crews were lost.
Just as I was getting out in June of 67 VP11 was changing over to the P3 Orion. I was offered Flight engineer school on the P3s but was more interested in getting out. I was a Jet mech, ADJ3.

A few years ago they were repowered with turbine engines. They are way more powerful. I live close to an air attack base and the pilots like them better but I miss the radial engine sound ,though a WWII ? pland converted to tanker works around here so it is neat. There are some P3 tanker planes !!!

Yes I was! February 23 and April 1, 1968. Both crews were lost, no survivors. I was with two planes on our way to Japan when the first shootdown happened. We were covering the coast of North Korea due to them seizing the USS Pueblo. We did get back in time for the memorial service. A piece of me is saddened by the P-3 retirement and Brunswick closing. I guess time marches on.
