My back hurts

55, I feel for you. I've had back pain for the better part of 20 years. Threw my back out so bad in October of '04, I was nearly vomiting at the pain.

I couldn't even walk to the kitchen, had to crawl. Going to the bathroom was bad, trying to sit while going...well....was excruciating... I pray to *** that I never have to experience that kind of pain.

Of course, the wife was helpful, as usual. As I layed on the couch trying not to vomit from the pain, she just said "aw, c'mon, it's not THAT bad! I gave birth to two children!". That really helped me tons.

Guess who had to put the kids to bed, upstairs? Yep, she wouldn't do it with regularity. Took me 3 weeks to convince her to mow the lawn...only after she saw the neighbor lady cutting her lawn. And she only did half of it. Guess who cut the other half of the lawn??

Whatever you do, OMG, don't mow the lawn for at least 8 weeks. I took lotsa prescribed pain killers that made me real dizzy just to reduce the pain the few nights after that. I felt like a useless zombie. And I never watched that much TV at 3am.

Back pain is the worst. Even worse when the spouse won't step up to the plate and take over responsibilities until the other half is well enough. I'm am SO glad that whole period of life is no longer in the rear-view mirror. Save for the leg numbness I get every so often.

I hope you get well and never, ever, have to deal with that pain ever again!

did you ever actually vomit? if you didn't consider yourself lucky... it brings the pain to a whole new level... fistful of oxycontin bad.

lord don't I hate the "I gave birth to xx children" card. my wife played that card once... my reply was "no, you, an epidural and morphine did."

probably not the smartest of things to say, but it got my point across. I'd have much rather have spent 18 hours in labor than deal with my 15 years of shoulder pain (isn't high school football great?).

Thanks for making allowances.

Brett, yep, it's plain old headaches for her, but calling them migranes does get sympathy, and has my brother running around.

I've got a 32 year old arthritic back (yay for me). when it flares, aspirin, ibuprophen, aleve or T-3's don't do squat. for me the biggest impact has been from roids like prendisone or medrol, although I hate the side effects from the preds. I also have a supply of vike ES's which thankfully I've not had to use in a month. also PT has been a huge help for me, twice a week for the last 2 months.

finally the nerve roots in my sacrum aren't causing me rediculous amounts of pain. Pablo's right, if I used heat on my back it would drop me completely over the edge (reduced to whimpering on the floor) iceing it helped alot.

headaches.. they suck.. if I get a migraine I find that taking 4 advils, 2 aspirin and a bottle of Dt. mtn dew, then hiding in a very dark and quiet room tends to shorten it's duration considerably.

I went to the doc because I had pulled a lower back muscle when getting up off the couch. he told me that being over weight can be aggervate it. it told me heating pad. cold compress and streching exersises can help it. he prescribed me muscle relaxant s and pain meds. but havent yet taken them as I dont like to take meds. while in the air force I had a cabnet full of tylenol 3. my friend aske me for something for his head ache. I said look in there. he went crazy. he said all them bottles full. I said yeah I never take them. so he took them off my hands lol. I will use them if my back gets really bad.

so I would goto the doc and see what he says. after all whats good for one person on here might be bad for you. I wqas xhocked when the doc told me to do steching exercises . it helped me.

Identify and attend to any 'structural issues' like crushed discs and such, but don't fall into a 'deconditioning syndrome'; back hurts, favor back, back gets weaker, back is more prone to getting hurt, do something to hurt back, back hurts ..... and eventually the back hurts all the time and you can't do anything.

Looking at your back there are some fairly small muscles that keep things aligned, so you need to strengthen those and to also rely upon larger muscles when doing things. You need strong leg, stomach, 'butt', and 'back' muscles, and need to keep them tight when lifting. Those muscles help when you need to balance unexpectedly in a funny position, with or without a load. People need to lift things all the time, put the things in cars, take them out, do yard work, put kids to bed, etc., so like anything else you need to make sure that the stress from doing those things is well within your capabilities. I recall someone saying that the objects that result in the most back injuries are pencils and golf balls, so a lot of people are very out of shape :^)

I find that deadlifts and staying flexible help the back more than anything, as deadlifts work a lot of large muscle groups, including the stomach. As mentioned before you do them all the time anyway, so crushed discs and the like aside, start on a routine to strengthen the back and work towards making sure that you can always lift some weight without worry. Also, don't get stuck just treating symptoms, as if someone is doing 'treatments' and not having you do any strengthening, they're just setting you up for lots more 'treatments'.

I am in construction, been through many back injuries and worked through them with tears in my eyes to feed my family. Sciatic like a nail driven in my ankle on every pulse 24/7, wore out 3 pairs workboots due to toe wearing out because I lost muscle control in my foot. At that time, 1990 the doc precribed dolibids and muscle relaxants because I refused traction, did nothing for me.

Portulaca/Purslane, the garden weed, the weed gardeners hate. It is spinach family. It is a muscle ralaxant/anti inflamatory, it WILL work within ten minutes, one good serving in powder, pill or in a bowl out of the garden will work 24 hours. Look up Portulaca/purslane on search engine. Use daily. The anti inflamatory effect will quickly relieve and subdue the initial swelling and pain, this anti inflamatory greatly reduces back injury timeline, the muscle relaxant effect will have you mobile.

One thing, put 1/8 teaspoon clove (spice) in warm water and drink it down with each serving portulaca, this prevents overloading of kidneys. I eat portulaca right out of garden with bacon bits, favorite salad dressing or olive oil, great salad, I wash and freeze it for winter use. Make great tea with honey.

It is ancient proven, used for milleniums, try it to believe it, I was sceptic, now I put no chemical in my body for back pain/headaches, this purslane/portulacca has saved my $1,000's of dollars on what would have been lost work days.

Other benifits:

-same 3 fatty acids in fish
-lowers blood pressure
-vitamin A/B/C
-cleanses bowls and urinary system
-potasium and magnesium
-sooth arthritis
-anti biotic
-anti oxidant
-soothes head aches
-shortness of breath
-for wounds and burns (healing)

much more, those of top of head.

Ancient proven, try it guys/girls, ten minutes after your try it you will be amazed how your once acking back feels.

research Portulaca on net, use search engine, this is for real and natural. it works

Losing weight does help back & knee pain. I notice when I weigh over 170 lbs, I always have back pain. Under 170 lbs, I feel like an 18 year old.

Don't take too much Aspirin on a regular basis, it will thin your blood to the point if you have high blood pressure, you will get a very bad nose bleed and have trouble clotting (happened to my dad)
