The plastic gas tank in the boat needs some cleaning. Its not horribly bad, just enough to clog the fuel line preventing startup. Is this ok? Ive read it does a really good job at cleaning. The stuff already comes in plastic containers so it should be ok to clean plastic with it right? Any other chemicals/cleaners that can be used?

It depends on the contaminant. Muriatic acid is excellent for cleaning lime. I routinely use it to clean my humidifier.

If the contaminant is organic in nature, I doubt muriatic acid will touch it.

Neutralization after treatment is as easy as rinsing with a soapy solution.

Is it an oil/sludge that's in the tank?

Do you plan to remove it to clean it?

Have you priced a new one?

I recently had residue in the plastic bowl of a diesel fuel storage tank filter like this one:

I tried muriatic acid and it didn't budge the residue. Next, I tried some carb cleaner and it dissolved the residue immediately.

Warning! My point is that the acid didn't work. Don't use anything that might damage the plastic.

Be careful. Empty gas tanks, fumes, static sparks....kaboom
