I was reading on a chrysler board on the development of ATF+4. The posting claimed Chrysler measured the viscosity loss from shearing tests as:
Dexron III 40%
Mercon V 19%
Type 7176D 32% loss - ATF+X???
Type 7176E 14% loss - ATF+3 I assume?
Type 9602 - 10% loss - ATF+4 I assume?
Posting said it was done with a 20 hour KRL Shear Test.
I don't know if its IIIe or IIIh.
Looking at Castrol Multi Veh ATF, it covers all of these. Pennzoils version covers DEX III and Mercon V.
Seems like you can get something much better than plain DEX III in terms of shear resistance for not much of a price increase.
I need to back to Walmart, I saw two SuperTech ATF products, one that only covered DEX III, and another one that covered multi vehi (which included DEX III). The price didn't seem that different. At the time I didn't understand why? I was standing there dumb founded and probably scaring the locals as they were loading up on Fram oil filters. The multi is probably better for shear.
