Muffler Tailpipe Repair "Patch" ?

The seam on one section of the tailpipe split on my FJ60 Land Cruiser. Is there a repair product that works, with an eye towards replacing the whole tailpipe in 'x' months later on? Something at Advance/NAPA/O'Reilly?

They sell muffler tape, but that really needs to be replaced.

No matter what you do, it is a bandaid repair at best until replaced. This is decent stuff if all you just want a temporary bandaid:

Although I normally use it as a sealer for a clamp, and you can’t really do that on a muffler. So not sure exactly how that repair would turn out.

Replace it!! AZ patch will leak and you run the risk of getting CO in your vehicle. NOT SAFE!

Anybody ever tried a FlexSeal patch on a muffler?

If you're hard up for cash sawzall that old muffler off and clamp a "Thrush Turbo" universal muffler on there. It'll cost you less than $50.

If you want to, get an appropriately sized hunk of sheet metal, slather the split with exhaust putty then girdle it using 2 large Ideal (worm screw) clamps as a truly temporary fix.

If any of this costs you anything...just get it fixed properly.

I would be tempted to use three large worm-gear hose clamps and a piece of aluminized / galvanized sheet metal. Wrap it up like a bandaid!

I tried one of those products with the mesh or fiberglass tape that also had a thick (almost putty-like) material that "cures" from the exhaust heat. I cleaned the surfaces fairly well, applied the material, then wrapped it with the tape. It lasted 2-3 days so either I did something wrong or it's hit or miss. I was looking to get rid of the car so I wasn't keen on spending much money, but the noise just got worse by the day. I did end up replacing the Y-pipe and it was like a brand new car !

I even did the extra step of cutting some aluminum and wrapping it over the hole, then wrapping the supplied tape, then the bonding material.

I've used a scrap of sheet metal and a number of large hose clamps chained together to make such a repair.

I tried that when the muffler on one of the Jeeps split in a similar way. It will buzz and rattle terribly.

The super long stainless hose clamps are available in plumbing at your local Home Depot and Lowes. I've tried those patch tapes in the '80s when I was poor. You'd have to buy enough to wrap that whole muffler, so not cheap. Cheap universal muffler is way more bettererrrr.
