Finally a dedicated, 75w-90/GL-4 and a 5w-30/GM Syncromesh fluid from the boys up in Superior, WI. (Heck, it only took about ten years of pleading...
wink.gif

Specs look excellent, with VI's of 170/194 respectively.... I understand the formulations are based on the same SOTA, base stock and shear stable, additive chemistry developed for the new MC lubricants.

Interestingly, the MTG has a viscosity at 100C (13.8) that is somewhat lower than that of SF MTL-R and Redline MT-90 (both 14.7).

...not saying it's good or bad, just interesting.

The idea here is optimized shifting in cold weather, along with maximum fuel efficiency. So they formulated this fluid as a "thin" 75w-90....

If you try and play games and get the VI too high, you start to compromise shear stability. So to make a lubricant thinner at very low temps, you also have to make it a tad thinner at 100C.

FWIW, most manual transmissions/transaxles typically operate w/ steady state fluid temps around 75C-90C....

Plead some more!
Amsoil, where is the 75w85?
or, should we mix the two 50:50(a la Redline)?

A 90wt falls between 13.5 and 24.0 @100c.

Coasterguy,

Ever heard of "benchmarking"?

The benchmarks for these formulations are clearly MT-90 and MTL, respectively, along with cross referencing to specific GM and DC, P/N's.

The MTG formulation is on the borderline of the SAE 85wt and 90wt, GL classifications - that's also by design.

TooSlick,

Thanks, I kind of figured as much. I've had good results with RL in the past and have been wanting to try SF for comparison and now I have another choice to make

Edit to fix typo

Yes, but you have four choices with SF instead of two.

The reason for four SF choices instead of two is my design philosophy of not producing "peanutbutter" or Universal fluids unless the manufacturers actually come up with a Universal spec.

Hey - don't shoot the messenger...

I'd be glad to swap an equal # of MTG for some SF MTL-R and do a "round robin" test....I almost took you up on the offer when you were in the "FSED" phase, but I frankly was too lazy to crawl under the TT at that time.

I have no doubt the SF MTL-R is excellent. I think you should develop a shear stable, SAE 0w-40 with a decent amount of ZDP and sell it for < $6.00/qt. I understand there is a pressing need in "Aussie Land" for that product. LOL!

Ted,
I thought the Audi specs the Esso LT71141 ATF for the MT as well, correct me if I'm incorrect. In that case, wouldn't MTF Glide be a better choice?

The 75w-90/GL-4 meets the requirements of Vw/Audi P/N: "G-005000" for transaxle and final drive use in FWD and AWD vehicles....

The other gear lubricant Audi and VW use is for the Haldex differentials on the quattro and four-motion configurations w/ transversly mounted engines. AFAIK there is no second source for that fluid. Vw/Audi vehicles with longitudinal mounted engines and "Torsen" diffs also use the G005000 fluid. In this latter case, I believe the transmission and torsen share a common sump.

The 5/6 speed tiptronic and CVT's use the Esso "LT 71141" fluid. I have not yet seen the fluid spec for the new DSG (direct shift gearbox) transmissions, but it may well be the same.

You can see why all these unique fluids drive the aftermarket guys nuts! Not to mention my friend Dan at DR Racing...

I can understand all these friction modified, OEM fluids for automatics, but NOT for manual transmissions and differentials....Those can easily be designed for generic fluids if that's what you want to do.

Hi,
Ted you said this - "I think you should develop a shear stable, SAE 0w-40 with a decent amount of ZDP and sell it for < $6.00/qt. I understand there is a pressing need in Aussie Land for that product. LOL!"

Ted a quick check with Porsche and MB here in Australia confirmed that they are both VERY HAPPY with the performance of M1 0w-40. After many years and many millions of kms of use they report no lubricant related engine failures - even in the NT where there are no open road speed limits, very high humidity, year round temps near 50C, road that are straight for 100kms+, and a number of twin turbo V8 Porsche Cayennes!

Now if you can introduce ANY 0w-40 oil here in OZ at $6 qrt/ltr you will be need to be a magician. The excellent M1 0w-40 we buy here sells at around $A20 ltr or $A85 5/ltrs
It will need to be a synthetic oil though Ted as our diverse climate, from -20C to 50C+, is VERY hard on 0w-40 oils!!

Oh - Castrol's range of synthetic gear oils and their Transmax Z ATF are world leaders. I have used them out to 1m kms, around 620k miles OCIs in diffs and gearboxes - as I have with Mobil's SHC 75w-90
The UOAs prove that they do the job very well indeed. In 14 years and many millions of kms we have never rebuilt a transmission when using these lubricants. Some of our transmissions have gone out to 1m miles and the Roadranger boxes still have "new feel" shift quality!

Regards
Doug

I know a ton of individuals that run the 4 and 5 sp transmissions in their 1.6L diesels love Redline, the ATG GL-4 AMSOIL has out was the only GL-4 rated oil that they had till now. I wonder how the new stuff will compair to Redlines. I noticed that when changed over to the AMSOIL ATG my shifting got notchy if that make sense. Kind of like the oil was to slick. I recently had to change out my axle output shafts and just put in Coastal 75w-90 gear oil and it shifts way better. I did run some ARX in it before I switched over to the AMSOIL to clean out the transmission. It has 168k on it. I plan on running the coastal for a few miles then switch over to Redline. I had bought it way back in the early fall.

I'll be using the MTF for the Honda. Ordered 2 quarts. Also ordered ATF for the Focus. That transmission sux.
