Sorry man. I am new to doing my own maintenace. I usually take it in to the Shop.

I just want to know what would be a good choice. Honda OEM fluids it what I would normally suggest. But this site makes me look deeper to other alternatives.

Sorry JMG. I'm not trying to be a wise-@$$ ... it just sorta comes naturally, I guess.

Yes, Honda can be really picky about some fluids ... their coolant, their power steering fluid ... even the dreaded double-pump fluid for the CRV's rear end.

But I have yet to find anything particularly impressive about Honda MTF.

Honda used to recommend 10W-30 motor oil for their 5-speeds ... but the older SF and SG versions, before they began drasticaly reducing amounts of barrier additives.

I think their MTF is merely a mineral oil formulated to be very much like older motor oils. I wonder if it is even friction modified?

Anyway, it seems like no big deal.

JMG,

If you decide to change it again someday then I'd have to recommend SF MTL-P. I have it in my 5 speed Escort ZX2(Mazda designed) and it shifts just fine in 0 degree weather. It also last a lot longer then your Honda fluid, making it way more economical.

I've used Red Line MTL in my '95 Civic for 1-1/2 years now (purchased it with 33K miles, now has 51+). IMO, a superior product. Shifts quite smooth and I like the EP additives vs. engine oil.

I just recently purchased a 94 civic ex 5spd, i want to change the fluid out. Sometimes its a bit notchy, though, i am still learning to drive stick.

My choices so far are:
Redline MTL
SF MTL-P
SF SynchroGlide
and at the very last: Honda MTF

I dont really know whats in there right now, but I'm thinking its 10w30 motor oil. I want to go with the SF stuff, seems like it performs a bit better than RL stuff.

Chris,

The new "Amsoil 5w-30 Syncromesh Fluid" is also recommended (by Amsoil Corporate) to replace the Genuine Honda MTF fluid. Specs are on the Amsoil website @ www.amsoil.com.

Pablo (a site sponser), can tell you more about this new synlube from Amsoil....

So now the choices are between:
SF MTL-P
Redline MTL
Amsoil MTF

I assume the slightly 'thicker' weights of these versus 'synchromesh' types like synchroglide from SF would better suit me in the central valley of california.

Shipping prices is what is discouraging me to order [any products] online; it'd be $35 (about $15 just for shipping) total for two quarts of SF MTL-P for example. I could get Redline at my local NAPA, and amsoil at a specialty store a town over but I do want to support the site sponsors so I will likely buy from them.

The only way to see what my 94 civic likes best is to buy and try them all, though I've heard very good things about SF products on this board. This new amsoil MTF intrgues me, but has anyone here used it yet?

I just flushed out my 6 speed this weekend and switched over to Redline MTL. The transmission is now smoother "in & out" of all gears.
