I'll change the MTF soon. I know that OEM Honda gear oil tends to shear quickly (according to UOAs). I guess it wouldn't be the best option for a car revs up to 8200rpm daily. Also it feels kind of notchy after driving few thousand miles. My OCI interval for MTF is 30k km - 20k miles.

Any recommendation?

Thanks in advance.

No grinding or popping out so far. My VIN is not included in the recall.

It just feels notchy and slightly harder to shift after driving it few thousand miles with OEM gear oil. Also I've seen some UOAs show that it shears out quickly.

I know aht your saying same issue with my 14 Fit. Thought ther trans was toast in a year and it was just toasted OE gear oil. And the replacement Honda oil seem to get trashed faster.

Honda MTF is pretty much a motor oil by its UOA - maybe try a somewhat thicker 4t bike oil? or RT6? with a MA rating?

OTW, Genuine Subaru MT lube is good stuff. Don't even park the car Near a DP GL-4/5MT lube.

Rotella T5 would probably work well in your Civic. GM Synchromesh is also popular. Some people do prefer OEM Honda MTF the best.

No doubt Redline makes great oils, but the price is really high. I bought 5 quarts of PUP cheaper than a quart of Redline. Not really sure if it's worth.

Is it safe to use motor oil as MTF? Honda only recommends 10w30 as a temporary solution.

In a Honda, it is

Back when I had my Integra, the Honda/Acura MTF was wonderful stuff. I'm surprised you guys don't like it. Back then, guys also liked the GM Synchromesh MTF. Not sure if that's even still popular.

about 15$/qt isnt that bad you need how many quarts to change per 30000mile interval?

Now I'm not advocating for redline motor oil that is a waste.. but in a MT shift feel is very important and I have really liked redline MTF in the past.

Just be happy something suitable is available.

Try finding API GL-5 75w80 for a subaru

(yes api gl-5 it has hypoid gears in the shared sump design)

Definitely use Red Line. You only change it once in a great while so the price is not a problem when you consider how well it works.

I used Mobil 5w-30 for the first 200K in my Honda as recommended by several Honda mechanics and the bearings were shot. I changed to Red Line after replacing all the bearings and now at 430K there is no bearing noise at all.

Other oils, engine and transmission oils sheer too quickly. Be a big spender and get the stuff that works.

I tried GM Synchromesh MTF once in my S2000, it was okay for 6-7k miles. I came back to Honda MTF, may be next time I will try Amsoil or Redline.

Will keep that in mind. Thanks for a great suggestion.

In my '09 Fit the OEM MTF has gotten notchy at around 20-22,000 Km each time and I have changed every 25,000.

I am trying Redline MTL 75w-80 now. It had maybe a slightly worse feeling than new Honda MTF when I first put it in, it may have improved a little since it's been in there. It is going on 20,000 Km now, and shifting hasn't degraded at all. I'm planning on leaving it in for 50,000 or more unless it gets notchy again.

Honda says to only use motor oil temporarily!

It doesn't not have yellow metal protection!

Why anyone would not use Honda MTF is beyond me. It's relatively cheap and easy to find. (Amazon has it on prime).

Pennzoil syncromesh would be my next choice if I had to use something different.

Honda MTF was too thin in my 89 Prelude. Notchy and scrapped when changing. Amsoil was better but Redline was the best. Amsoil would only last about 10k. Redline has lasted 25k and there has been NO shifting degradation.

When I had my Acura, Redline was the best manual transmission fluid as well.

I think it took 2 qts and will easily last 30k.

fix your tranny instead of band aid fluids that will cause more damage in long run

Amsoil MTF

It is the best, hands down

Been running it for the past 110k miles on my 01 acura integra. Shifts better now at 180k than when i got it at 55k. I leave it in for about 50-60k miles before switching it out and even then it still feels amazing.
