Hello everyone. Our 2012 Nissan Versa with 6 speed manual will be due for its 30000 mile manual transmission fluid change. I just changed the oil and was at Oreily's getting an oil change sticker. I looked on the shelf for an MTF that I could use but none of it had a GL-4 spec. I asked the people behind the counter and got an interesting reply. They told me that they had a Nissan Versa with 6 speed manual as a parts delivery car and that they too had the same issue. The told me to go to the Nissan dealer and get the Nissan MTF as they had nothing they could even order that would fit the bill. So the auto parts store told me to go to Nissan as they had to do the same thing. I would like your input on this to find an alternitive. I contacted Amsoil and they said the same thing as they too did not have a correct MTF. Here is what the owners manual says:

Genuine NISSAN Manual Transmission Fluid (MTF) HQ Multi 75W-85, or equivalent *3
*3: If Genuine NISSAN Manual Transmission Fluid (MTF) is not available, API GL-4, Viscosity SAE 75W-85 may be used as a temporary replacement. However, use Genuine NISSAN Manual Transmission Fluid (MTF) as soon as possible.

I did some looking and this is a synthetic fluid from the OEM. Interesting the manual transmission is synthetic and engine had conventional motor oil from the factory. LOL What are your thoughts on the MTF for my car? I am looking for options to avoid the dealer price markup if I can.

Nissan MTF and Redline MT85 are the only two 75W85's I can think of off the top of my head. Nissan MTF is some good fluid. You can get it cheaper than dealership price here. DO NOT use parts store GL5 fluid, use the correct spec'd fluid only. Coz Ceh from Conceptzperformance is great to deal with. I've bought Nissan parts from him:

You might consider Motorcraft xt-m5-qs. Full synthetic 75w-90. It's the favorite of many Miata owners. I'm running it and loving it.

You can use "colored metals friendly" Gl 4/5 or Gl 4+ or Gl5 + MT-1 instead...

I had the same problem at Hyundai buying their 75w85...I bought Gl 4/5 75w90 instead and gearbox works just fine

I would try Pennzoil Synchromesh, it's about the only MTF available at the parts store. I've used it in several different manual transmissions and they either continued to shift fine or improved in shifting.

Synchromesh is too thin, unless on an MPG quest. Both Valvoline and Pennzoil have Synchromesh fluid.

Hyundai, Redline, Gm, Mopar, Nissan... have a 75w85 GL4.

If you don't mind a slightly thicker 75w90, Amsoil, Ford, Redline... have a GL4. Most will shear to a 75w85 anyway.

H. The next group of MTL’s are in the 10.x cSt (SAE 75W80) range:

1. Redline MTL 75W80

2. Amsoil MTF (9.7 cSt)

3. GM Synchromesh’s

4. Volvo MTF 645

5. Fuchs TITAN SINTOFLUID SAE 75W-80 synthetic MTF (Carries a GL-5 rating as well)

6. Lodexol (Morris Lubricants) MTF

I.The next higher viscosity MTL would be a 12.0cSt@100C and SAE 75W85

1. Redline MT-85 – 12.0 cSt.

I have Pennzoil Synchromesh in my 5spd and its working great. There is more noise due to the lower vis, but it does not seem to be a problem, not getting worse.

I too used Pennzoil Synchromesh in my Nissan's transmission for a few thousand miles. Like yours it made mine a tiny bit noisy (in 5th gear only) but shifted like a dream. I got a lil paranoid so I went back to a 75W90.

Is the Valvoline MTF the same thing as Pennzoil Synchromesh basically?

I have had nothing but fantastic results with Redline MTL and Gear Lubes. I have been using their gear lubes and MTL's for since about 2000 off and on. I have tried Amsoil,Pensoil,GM,Royal Purple, Mobil-1 and Pentosin. Prior to 2000 Mobil-1 and Pentosin where my two favorites.

To date I have not found anything that shifts as well as Redline. All of them in my real world practical use have proven to protect just fine. In my 2005 Camry most of the other's lose their cold shift and warm shift feel in 10K to 30K miles of use. The Redline maintains their shift feel even after 50K miles of use.

The worst product I have used was from Royal Purple. Amsoil has started to lose it's shift feel after 6 months and it never felt that great to start. I did not use their MTF but my car does not call for a MTF and for a long time Amsoil did not have an MTF. Their Sever Gear meet the OEM requirements of my car and was available locally but did not perform well. Since I have not tried their MTF I can not recommend it.

I think that Redline's MTL and MT products like MTL, MT90, MT85 have proven track record that no one else can match. All the other players are late comers to the table and do not have the customer satisfaction that Redline has with it's MTL/MT products. No one has the proven track record of smooth shifting in everything it has been tried in!!

My experience is with a 50/50 blend of Redline MTL and MT-90. I am thinking that Redline did not have MT-85 in the past hence the blend.

Corvettes/Toyota's/GM/Dodge/Fords that I have worked on or owned have all liked Redline MTL/MT products and their gear lubes.

Good Luck!

Castrol Syntrans 75w-85 is a perfect fit, and might be an OEM supplier for Renault and Nissan since both tied together now and the Versa is a modified version of the Renault Clio.
You probably have to contract your local Castrol distributor where you live but they probably can get it for you by order.

Well, first off, the Royal Purple fluid has the viscosity of an ATF and is too thin for a MT that specs 75W85 thru 75W90.

Secondly, Amsoil's Severe Gear is NOT a dedicated MTL, it's a GL-5 differential lubricant.

Yes, very similar.
