Ford Escape SE vs. Mazda CX-5 vs. Subaru Forester 2.5 Touring vs. Toyota RAV4

"Subaru's made a big leap forward with this CVT. They've taken all the elastic out of it," said Evans. "Response feels immediate. It makes the power very linear."

Have to laugh at all this stuff a bit. Last winter we went to VT in a friend's CRV, and all it did to proportion power for the most part was burn brakes. Boy did it stink when we would stop!

As an electric system, it did work, but didnt strike me as a great thing to count on in the long run if you actually need 4 wheels driving quite a bit.

^ LOL I just found a better comparison from MT so I posted that instead.

I agree, it's pretty ridiculous. LOL

The new Subaru CVTs are excellent -- they are correct in that. Haven't driven the CX-5 so I can't comment, but it looks like a good small ute.

As much as I like GM, a Mazda CX-5 would likely be gracing the driveway if my family unit ever needed something larger than our current cars.

Odd to see the Escape in last place (i've had them as rentals and liked them, so the others must be REALLY good) and the CR-V not even in the test at all.

The short time the GF had her CX-5 before she passed, it was a great vehicle. It had enough power, great auto transmission, handled like on rails, great gas mileage. A/C was never off and averaged 28.5 MPG. Pretty sure the new 2.5l engine is even better. Only bad feature was the smallish info center screen. Needed to be 1.5 in. bigger.

I have to disagree with the complements to the Subaru CVT. I drove three new Subarus less than a month ago: 2014 Forester, 2013 Outback, and 2013 Impreza. The CVTs weren't bad, and I'd agree that they are an improvement compared to the old 4-speed conventional automatic, but Subaru programming let the RPMs all over the place even with steady throttle input - my impression (if I recall other test drives accurately) is that Nissan has programmed them better. And the 2014 Forester had an awful overzealous launch to a feather light touch on the go pedal. If I needed AWD I'd put up with the quirks for an Outback, but with no need for AWD I could not.

Everything they said about the CX-5, all comparos have repeated about the 2014 Mazda 6 also ...(now both have same engine) - I can totally believe it, as we have the same experiences with our 6.

the 6 won pretty much all mid-size comparos for the same reasons the CX5 won this X-over comparo.

The Skyactiv Mazdas are doing great things and beating them all, really.
