Well, MS isn't known for sticking to their release schedules. If they say "end of 2009", it'll more likely end up being end of 2010.

True but.....

Vista's sales are well below expectations. MS has some real incentive to do the next one on time.
 
Although I use Linux most of the time, have ran VISTA on a couple of computers with no issues and like the features it has. I tried service pack 1 pre release for VISTA and it installed without issue but took quite some time. Then I found out that it stuck a message down in the lower right of the desktop and too had an expiration date of June as I recall and would have to be uninstalled before the released service pack would be installed.

As there was no issue with hardware, etc., with both computers, took it off.

Funny over the years that when Windows first came out many still did much from the DOS Prompt and there were many of the same issues we hear about today?

There were issues with drivers for hardware when XP came out some companies would not release drivers for some of their products!

Think VISTA will be around about 5 years like it or not?

After spending some time with it and the some of the driver issues are resolved, you will find it is all not that bad!
 
It's not how Vista looks or how you use it that has people complaining. The problem is that Vista crashes and has multiple other technical problems that need to be fixed. So lets not lose sight of why MS is working hard to bring out a service pack and why many corporate users don't want Vista. The flaws and problems are under the shiny new exterior not in slick new look and feel features.

Another problem is the existing programs that people are using from prior to Vista that people want to continue to use-some have been in use for a few years-need to be modified or new versions need to be made in order for Vista's problems to be solved. Not everyone just uses MS Office, WMP and IE. Millions of people use other software too to do lots of different things.

You can't just use Vista for a day and say "It looks fine to me", "it didn't crash for me so it must be user error on those other people's part". There is too large of an outcry for there to be nothing wrong with Vista. It's not a plot against MS. Even if you personally haven't had a single problem, LOTS OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVE. The large number of corporate users must have some good reasons for continuing to buy Vista site licenses and then installing XP.

Lots, but in this case, nothing. At our site we have many in house developed applications and about 40-50 add on applications. Rolling out a new OS is HUGE, support tools and infrastructure, app certification etc; there are even W2K machines still in use as we just started the XP roll out 2 years ago (machine life is 3 years)

There are just no benefits to this OS that warrants our cost of deployment.

True but.....

There are some great fetures in Vista, but the price MS wants for Vista in a retail box is quite high IMO. I think alot of people just don't want to pay $200 (for Ultimate) when XP still works well.

JonG I think the vast majority of Visa is on new PCs that come with it already installed. I don't think MS is selling very many copies as upgrades or as single full copies, I don't know this for sure, just my opinion.
 
I have been using Vista for somewhere close to a year and it has never crashed. Just about every single piece of hardware and software I have works on the computer. Even my dedicated Nikon scanner now works on Vista. And Service Pack 1 for Vista is supposed to be coming out sometime in the next fews months. The number of Vista computers will increase because just about every new personal desktop computer sold has Vista installed. You can still get Windows XP installed on a computer-Dell, for example, I think will do it but you have to search. It will be a while before business users switch-businesses are always very conservative and make sure all their applications will work before they switch to a new operating system.

Right now I think Vista is something like 20% of the market. By the end of next year it will probably be 50% of the market. XP is going to hang around for a while. Apple is selling pretty well and may be 10% or even 15% of the market in the not so distant future. In their nighttime dreams the Linux people dream about a Linux world. For them it has always been the Great Battle between the 'Dark Empire' and the few brave Starwars heros.

If you hate Microsoft maybe you should buy an Apple Computer. You can run Mac OS X AND Windows XP on the same computer.
 
Microsoft is going to end Windows XP support in something like 2009. But they don't have to stop Windows XP production to make people switch to Windows Vista. How many new computers are built every year-maybe 100 or 150 million or so? The vast majority of the new personal desktop computers will run Windows Vista anyway. Every time somebody somewhere buys a new computer running Vista an older computer running XP gets replaced or is sold to somebody else who usually keeps running the old XP.

XP will be around for a while. There are some 1 billion personal computers in the world. But Vista every year will gain market share. Right now Vista probably has something like 20% market share and next year it will be higher. Three or four years from now XP will begin to seriously fade into history.

And Microsoft is developing a new operating system right now. I think it is code named 'Vienna' and is being called Windows 7.

Even when it comes to servers there is some serious statistical evidence that Windows server is starting to gain some serious ground.

Apple manufactures about 10-12 million computers a year I believe. I don't know the exact numbers. In the USA Apple may be going to 10% market share of personal computers and perhaps someday will be 15%. If somebody wants an alternative to Windows Apple is probably the way to go. You can even run both Mac OS X and Windows XP on a Mac. Worldwide Apple is probably something like 3-5%.

The best anybody can determine Linux in the USA is less than 1% of personal computers. The figure may be higher for the world as a whole. Back around 1998 when Apple was only about 2% people thought Apple was headed out of business. So why do some people think Linux at 1% is about ready to dominate the market?

A computer running Vista needs a strong enough computer with decent graphics and plenty of RAM. If you have a computer like that and recent enough software and hardware you should have no problems running Vista. Some of my software dates back to 2003 and 2004. And it runs. Nikon surprised me by making their dedicated film scanners Vista compatible. Every software and hardware company will make their stuff Windows compatible first. Because Windows is over 90% of the market.

There have been some problems with Vista but there have also been problems with Apple's new Leopard operating system and problems with Linux operating systems. Nobody talks about any problems with Linux and Mac OS X. They only talk about Microsoft. I suppose when you dominate the market that comes with the territory.

Even if Microsoft goes into a period of decline we will live in a Microsoft world for at least the next several years. After all, there are some 1 billion computers out there and most of those computers run some version of Windows.
 
Rename XP, add direct 10/10.1, better component drivers, readyspeedboost, tighter security, rename it Vista 2.0 and......

They should've just cleaned up XP!

They would need to add the Vista eye candy and bling too.

The free Vista Transformation Pack for WinXP SP2 can do that...for free.
