Well, ToyotaNSaturn that's what our customers want is a more open Netork so salesmen and illiterates can get in there and play around. I'll not have it. They seem to be as trusting as little children, but I have do deal real world.

We are way off topic and I'll be giving Firefox a workout. I'm thinking I may have to do it also for our business and just use IE when required. Spyware is killing us.

Pablo, I have to disagree with you. I run McAfee, updated every boot, and a cable router with built-in firewall and have had lots of spyware find it's way onto my computer through IE, including the CoolSearch one that hijacks your home page and installs dlls and registry changes. I also check the Windows Update site frequently and download all the critical updates, as well as most of the non-critical ones.

I use:

Mozilla Firefox
FREE ZoneAlarm firewall
FREE AVG anti-virus
FREE Ad-aware
FREE Spybot

Never had any major problems such as you describe...

I 110% recommend running this group of software for you Windows XP guys (I'm currently using XP). Bet 'ya you won't have any problems!!

Yep, ToyotaNsaturn, we get major pressure from our corporate customers to even dump our Novell LAN. I have no idea why, because it doesn't affect them at all.

They forced us to use IE and then never implement the changes requiring it themselves. It's group-think.

We're not IT professionals, but we can handle Novell. If Microsoft is forced on us we can't afford to hire all the support $$$$, when you see the blue screen of death.

That's part of the problem, large companies force vendors to comply and there is no choice.

Jelly I use pretty much the same thing as you, except no firewall(I have a router), and no Ad aware. I used to get Spyware with IE(which I think is what he was talking about), but not Firefox. Just a couple tracking cookies. For what it's worth though, until recently, this computer has had no antivirus or firewall for over 3 years.

What?? I didn't say IE was strong...I just wrote that good anti-viral and firewall programs don't care was browser one chooses....so why are you disagreeing? Have you had compatability problems??? I do think that it's a pain to have your firewall try and stop everything that IE let's in....so maybe your firewall is set a bit loose, or time for a new firewall....or better yet a new browser, as this thread is all about.

Chill Pablo. Point is why should we have to invest in so much 3rd party software and hardware to plug all the security holes if we don't have to. All agreed on that.

A good ISP is everything!!! I have two. One is great and the one I must use for business id terrible. They seem to have nothing running on their Servers and will pass any virus, trojan, spyware, etc. straight through and it's up to you.

Jelly and some of you just have good ISP's.

If fast means good, then yes, I do. Around four megabits.

If you're talking about "virus, trojan, spyware, etc." though, then you are incorrect.

My roommate has a super-nice Dell computer that is absolutely crippled with all sorts of BAD "things" that have gotten onto his computer through the use of programs like IE and Kaaza and downloading all sorts of files that contained trojan horses, viruses, spyware, and unneeded and dangerous programs. He uses no firewall protection, has an anti-virus program with outdated definitions (came with a 90-day subscription but has expired), and uses no spyware or adware protection.

He doesn't care though...

I like Firefox the more I use it. The interface is more enhanced than Netscape, I like that.

Also read today that Win XP SP2 breaks Firefox. I haven't confirmed this myself as I refuse to install a beta SP from Microsoft on any machine, period. Can anyone else confirm this?

I just intalled Moz. FireFox today, in the very basic setting. Just installed it; didn't modify anything.
Do I already have the Pop-up blocking and the Spyware protection that come with FireFox?

Or do i have to install any of the "extentions" on the FireFox site?

What extentions do you guys recommend?

Thanks for any tips.

now I've got a problem:

When I use FireFox, on the toolbar, my "back" and "forward" buttons are inactive, can't click them at all.
How can I fix this?

Did you open a page in a new tab?

Glad you asked.

Pop-up blocking is standard. You can change the settings in the options menu. There really isn't spy ware protection, it just is immune to most spy ware, because most spy ware is written to take advantage of security problems in IE.

I have and recommend the following extensions:
Adware- must have, blocks ads and entire servers at your discretion.
Open in IE - Allows you to easily open a page in IE, for those that require you to use it.
Google Toolbar - tons of features not included in normal search bar such as site searching, search highlighting ect.
Image zoomer - great for viewing images.
Spell bound - Spell checker, comes in handy for forums.

I couldn't resist downloading and installing the mozilla package. I run MS Me and it is prone to lockup at the slightest provocation, requiring a restart. It got really bad last week and I discovered the sircam worm had struck right thru Norton AV. Got the free EZ firewall and AV. Had a great time getting rid of sircam with MS Me.
So far, one day, Mozilla seems OK. It loads like lightening compared to MS Exploder.
