Moved to Australia Volvo XC60 T6 2014... 5W30??

Moved from the UK to Oz In the UK I used to run 10w40 in a Turbo Foreter....... moved to Oz and bought a 2014 Volvo XC60 T6 and manual says to run 0-5W30 A5/B5 seems a bit of a light spec oil for this beast of an engine compared to the Subaru would it be OK to run A3/B4?

Did a bit of digging and best A5/B5 I could find is Penrite 10 Tenths Racing 5 Engine Oil 5W-30 apparently 100% blend PAO Ester anyone heard of this oil?

I would run an A3/B4 in your Volvo. Even better, would be one that also meets MB 229.5, but both are a matter of personal preference. I’ve had good luck with long engine life on all 5 Volvos using an A3/B4. 0/5W30 would be fine. So would a 0/5W40.
 
Compared to the forester it is to me, 6cyl 3l turbo 325 HP and 354 pound feet of torque. It's a baby compared to what engines you guys get is the US...but to me it's awesome compared to what cars I'm used to driving..

What 6L 500HP beast you're driving ?

That engine is awesome. Got a ride in a T6 XC70, and now am looking for one cheap lol. But I did own its cousin once - the 3.2L XC70. Slower, but at over 270k miles it still didn't consume any oil, and got up to (US)31MPG on the long family trips. From what I hear the turbos did not hurt the reliability on that straight six, which is why I'm on the lookout for it... Especially that so many people in US don't even realize how fast that swedish sleeper is. Anyways, I ran oils with Porsche A40 and MB229.5 ratings at 5000 mile intervals.

I’ve had 3 Volvos, 5 cylinder both NA and turbo. Both 10-30 and 5-40 synthetics did well in them. If I recall, Castrol 5-40 euro became the favorite oil in one of them while penzoil platinum 10-30 in the other.

Welcome to Australia, don't worry about sharks and spiders, just remember to wear sunscreen.

I agree with Astro above, a full-synthetic euro oil in either A5/B5 or A3/B4. Both are full-SAPS, but differ in HTHS, with the A3/B4 being a bit thicker with a higher HTHS. Select either a 30 grade or a 40 grade oil.

Oil is very expensive in Australia, but every second week either Repco or Supercheap Auto or AutoBarn will have an oil sale. Keep an eye on these, and buy when on sale.

That Penrite 10-Tenths Racing (100% PAO & Ester) is a very good oil, I've used it before, but it's also very expensive. Also in Australia, M1 is also very good but also very expensive. Both are rarely on sale.

Other good, euro rated and full synthetic oils, but more commonly on sale are:
- Valvoline SynPower 5W40 A3/B4
- Valvoline SynPower FE 5W30 A5/B5
- Castrol Edge 10W30 A5/B5
- Castrol Edge 5W30 A3/B4 (also MB 229.5)
- Castrol Edge 5W40 A3/B4 (MB 229.5 and Porsche A40)
- Castrol Magnatec 5W30 A3/B4
- Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 A3/B4 (MB 229.5 and Porsche A40)
- Shell Helix Ultra X 5W30 A3/B4 (MB 229.5)
- Shell Helix HX8 5W30 A3/B4 (MB 229.5)
- Penrite HPR 5 (5W40) A3/B4 (MB 229.5)


There are others like M1 0W40, Edge 0W40, Synpower 0W40, and Penrite Full Synthetic 10W40, but they are rarely on sale.

The list above will give you options, if you are looking for alternatives. I use a lot of the Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 and the Castrol Edge 5W30 A3/B4 myself. Due to quality, availability and price, plus both also carry MB229.5

However if you like the Penrite 10-Tenths Racing, then go for it, it's good stuff. One of the few racing oils that also carries API and ACEA ratings, so it's good for the street and good for the track.

Note: that Penrite 10-Tenths Racing 5W30 you linked to is their racing oil, so it carries a lot of zinc (ZDDP) at about 1800 ppm. It's an anti-wear additive. A regular Euro oil carries about 1000 ppm, and a Dexos1 oil about 800 ppm. You can also get a Penrite 10-Tenths Premium 0W40 A3/B4, it's also PAO based, but it has a more regular 1000 ppm of zinc. Which is ample.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to write all this ! do I want to avoid a lot of zinc?
 
ZDDP (zinc and phosphorus compound) has a lot of advantages, it protects the metal of the engine from wear, it's an antioxidant that protects the oil from degradation and it quenches low speed pre ignition (LSPI) events in a DI-turbo engine. The disadvantage is that if you burn a lot of oil, it can poison your exhaust cats. In very high concentrations some say it may be a little corrosive. ZDDP also adds to the sulphated ash (SAPS) level in the oil, with the trend to lower this to protect particulate filters in the exhaust system.

How much is too much or too little?


The link above is a PDF produced by Mobil for their M1 oils. Regular M1 oils (GF-6, C3, Dexos1 etc) have 750 to 900 ppm (parts per million) zinc. Full SAPS Euro oils (A3/B4, Porsche A40, etc) have 1100 ppm zinc. Their heavy duty oils (M1 15W50, M1 TDT 5W40) have 1300 ppm zinc. Their motorcycle oil M1 V-Twin 20W50 has 1750 ppm, while their Racing oils have 1850 ppm zinc. You can see that Penrite is consistent with these levels, and I would trust both Mobil and Penrite to make good oils.

Note that ILSAC & API put chemical limits on their fuel economy viscosity grades that don't exist on the thicker grades. So you can get a Euro 5W40 or 0W40 with 1000 to 1100 ppm zinc, as API SN or SP. Yet the same formulation as a 5W30 or 0W30 would "only" be API SL due to enforced chemical limits. Even though it would pass the higher level tests. I don't stress that Castrol Edge 5W30 A3/B4 (MB 229.5) is only API SL due to it's 1000 to 1100 ppm zinc levels

Personally I would (and have) happy use Penrite Racing, but I don't see any need to buy it for a car I'm just driving around on the street. I usually go for a top shelf, but cheaper, Euro oil like Castrol Edge 5W30 A3/B4 or Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 A3/B4. Or anything with MB 229.5 or Porsche A40. I personally think 1000 to 1100 ppm is the sweet spot as a general rule of thumb, unless I have specific requirements to address.

BTW if I had your car in Australia, another oil I would seriously consider is Castrol Edge 10W30 A5/B5. Given you factory manual says to run 0-5W30 A5/B5, this 10W30 A5/B5 would work very well. The first number is just cold starting, not ever a problem in Oz. But being a 10W30 (instead of a 5W30) would give you lower Noack volatility and more shear stability. Both very good things.
