Posting here because Euro: A5/B5 vs C2 0w-30 in a Volvo T6 where manual calls for 0w-30 A5/B5?

hi everyone,

Just wanting to ask for an Australian based (no snow, winter, or below 0 temperatures) the Volvo S60 T6 I have in the manual calls for 6.8L of 0w30 A5/B5 rated oil (manual link) https://www.volvocars.com/au/support/car/s60/13w46/article/4ce54cf8c4ef63adc0a801e80065d43b

So my question: Can I use a "ACEA C2" rated oil in place of A5/B5 given that it meets or exceeds this rating?
 
You absolutely can. Quite a lot of oils are dual rated a5b5 and c2, a3b4 and c3 etc. Especially in the typically hot Aussie weather you’ll be better off with a good C2/C3 and maybe a 5w30 as it isn’t ever going to get cold enough to matter between a 0w and a 5w.

ACEA Cx. In your case C2 are used with low sulphur fuels (max of 10ppm). Australia has 10 ppm diesel but gasoline is at 50 ppm. Do any automakers use ACEA Cx oils in gasoline cars in Australia?

A5/B5 is a fuel efficiency spec and you could go slightly thicker by using A3/B4. You'll have a wider range of viscosities to choose from (0w30, 5w30, 0w40, 5w40). The only difference is that the HTHS is slightly higher with A3/B4 which means slightly worse MPG which you probably won't notice.

I run Petronas 5W-40 C3 in my 2011 S80 T6 in Melbourne. Used to run 5W-30 A5/B5 but it burned it like crazy. Tried 5W-30 C3 and it burned less but still a fair bit. It hasn’t burned a drop of 5W-40 and it’s super smooth and quiet running this oil.
