Motul gearbox 80w90

Thanks guys! I might just do that
It's hard to turn down for the price, and it'll give Dad enough for his as well.

I'd never seen this product.....and wasn't sure of the GL4 rating.....possibly no sulphur?

My understanding is gl4 is safer for soft metals (like synchros in manual transmissions). Car care nut has some info on his YouTube channel. Possibly half of gl5 additives to prevent wear on soft metals. Maybe you can find a VOA.

I know I only use Mobilube PTX or a gl4 in my 911 manual to prevent synchro wear.

If your diff allows a gl4 then it should be ok. Check your manual. I used gl5 in my Subaru crosstrek diffs many years ago.

It's GL5, supossedly compatible with GL4.
Motul usually uses cooper protection additives in these like thiadazole and phosphorus multifunction. There is sulphur, but different versions on each oil.
I did use 75w90 GL4/GL5, good oil in general not problems until exploding gearbox/DMF  but not it's fault probably.

Thanks a ton guys. I may do another round of Total trans syn 75w90. It's a straight 75w90...slightly more money but also a synthetic.

This gearbox stuff does Intruige me though. If Dad wants his diff done, I may still buy the 12 liters for sale and report back.

You just can't go wrong with Motul. I've used it for a long time, well formulated oils.

At least in India, they're a legend in bike oils - car / truck / gearbox etc oils are somewhat of a sideline for them, but still high quality stuff.

They are not compatible. If you put a GL5 lube in a manual transmission it won't shift properly Why? It's too slick for the synchro's. Also, GL5 and soft metal synchro's don't get along.

Shifting performance or compatibility has nothing to do with GL or syncros. API is not shifting/syncros class, it's gears. There are GL4 and GL3 with poor shifting and GL5 with incredible shift cold and warm temps. Motul GL4/GL5 shifted for me really good except when cold, first miles only, it was because visco properties more than additives. I did know that.

About soft metals is other history.

I just had a different experience. I put motul 80w90, mineral, in the front and rear 4/24 and was in service for about 20k. My rogue only holds about 10 ounces in the front and about 18 in the rear. I usually change these annually since they hold so little, and it’s always been nasty (especially the front) but never sludgy till yesterday. I was noticing a little extra noise so figured I’d swap it out for some schaeffers 75-90 I had on hand. There was no metal to be seen, but this stuff completely broke down. Now I’m probably going to have to do a short run then drain and fill the transfer to rinse this stuff out completely.
