With an actual VI of "only" 183 there are less expensive, more readily available options. For example a blend of the Toyota or Idemitsu 0W-20 and RL 0W-40 with give a 200 VI 0W-30 ranging from light to heavy, whatever you want.

No. All the oils below are HTHS 3.5+.

Liqui-Moly Synthoil Longtime 0w30 = 186
Redline 0w30 = 183
Technically only the Liqui-Moly carries any API certs, though all the others claim to "beat" API SM and the like.
There are plenty of Xw40s that beat 183, too.

I was talking about actual OEM approved, API certs that anyone who wanted to follow their manuals/makers' rules to the letter of the law could use without worry.

Is Lucas 0w-30 any good? I think Ive got 6 or more quarts somewhere in my stash, that was probably bought for a Jeep Cherokee.
Not much is known about it. The numerical specs are impressive but the mfg specs it claims to beat are very old. Run it, get a UOA, and report back!

Oops, good call. When mixed 1:1 with the 0w40 the HTHS is above 3.5 and it retains a good VI above 180.

Yes, typo on my part with Redline 0w30.
I have spoken to the owner of RLI twice about this, and he said that the 0w30 and 5w30 are both close to 3.8, which sounds right considering the basestocks. Redline 5w30 is 3.8 and it uses a similar group V base.

Thanks for the info. I wonder why they don't put the real number on their PDS. Also, it doesn't seem to square with the Energy Conserving claim.

The spec' sheet has been removed from the Motul website since the VI is not the claimed 235 but rather 183 and consiquently the KV40 spec' is likely more like 50cSt as opposed to 40cSt.
I'm sure the oil, which is popular in Europe, will reappear shortly on the Motul website once a new PDS can be produced.
So the light oil champ' remains the EOM made Toyota Brand 0W-20 with it's VI of 216 and KV40 of 37cSt.
