If you can place the flashlight inside the end hole to light up the filter screen from the inside out. That might show more of the screen. Thanks

Nevermind: I see that's exactly what you did..I'm blinder than a bat sometimes.

I would imagine there is no mention of the efficiency rating on this one from the manufacturer. It's got to be pretty bad.

You only have to go back to the 70's to find motorcycles that didn't have any sort oil filter although some of the better engineered ones had slingers - essentially a centrifugal oil filter. I ran a 1981 Suzuki 400 single with a metal mesh re-usable oil filter and that bike like most had the gearbox running in the same oil. In spite of the rock catcher, the engine came to no obvious harm over the 14 years I had the bike. It even had a washable oiled foam air filter. That was one cheap bike to service. Oil changes every 1000 miles was probably how they got away with it.

Yep, I've cleaned out many "slinger"/centrifugal oil cleaners on older bikes with no real oil filter element. They worked amazingly well, had all kinds of debris (sludge/paste like) material in them.

From 1983 Honda XSR200R Owner's Manual. "Oil filer rotor" is the centrifugal oil cleaner/filter.

The main thing was to remember to do it or even have an awareness that the some sort of centrifugal filter existed at all. Your Honda example looked simple and I had a Fiat 500 in the 70's that was also relatively simple. Prior to 1979 BMW motorcycles had slingers that were not so simple to clean and needed extensive dismantling to get at them. One description of the process starts with "you might want to remove the engine from the frame". And if you neglected to do it and the slingers filled up, it could cause very expensive damage.
Thankfully, Oil filtration has come a long way since then.
