1995 F-150.246000 miles.4.9 I-6.I bought this old truck in March.I got the Purolator filter and Pennzoil YB 10w30 deal back then @ AAP.Last week I changed the oil this time I used a Motorcraft filter. Now I'm getting start up noise for a brief period.Didn't do that with the Purolator.Anyone understand why this would happen?I've been using Napa Gold on my other engines since I discovered local Napa has half price sale every Saturday.I used the Motorcraft because I happened to be @AAP nad knew it was an easy grab and go that day.Should I get rid if the motorcraft?

I don't know if it's had any work done to it or not but for 246000 miles it runs durn good.Looking through the oil filter cap it's real clean.Uses approx a qt every 2000.Think it leaks a little. The guy I bought it from had it 6 years he said he used Valvoline/Castrol.So if you think the FL-1A is ok who am I to dissagree.Thanks.

One of my first cars was a 72'Maverick with a 200c.i,engine was way better than the car.Everything rusted back then .

I use the FL-1A on my topaz and it seems like every once in a while it will take a little longer to build pressure than normal(a second or two at most). Most of the time oil pressure seems to be instataneous.

You can try a FL400S next round. It has a silicon ADBV. It might solve your start up rattle. I don't recall the filter orientation on that engine. I had a 240, its predecessor ..but it was 35+ years ago. I flogged it mercilessly ...brutalized the thing. Run hot ..low on oil ...floored more than it cruised. The C4S connected to it survived too.

ive used nothing but the motorcraft FL-1A on my fairmont, and its been good to me. however if i was in your situation, and started noticing problems with something, i'd most likely switch back what worked fine. thats just me though..

Does it burn oil or is it just leaking? My 1990 leaked around the valve covers a little and I just tightened up the cover bolts and that stopped it. I just cut open my FL1A and it has the string around the filter element, what does that tell you about who makes it?

For visual reference, here are a couple of Purolator-made filters that I've cut open, with the string around the media:

Is there any hard evidence that motorcraft filters are made by purolator other than the string?

They are identical in every way..........

Sure. Look on the bottom. You'll see a "3" inlet port "4" inlet port "16" inlet port or 3/4-16

..but beyond that, JT1 ..Purolator, AFAIK, is the ONLY manufacturer that uses string around the media.

Motorcrafts should have a thread end bypass. The last few Purolators I cut open didn't have the thread. Am I the only one that has not found the thread in newer ones?
