Looking for Mercon V alternative to Motorcraft’s. I used to be able to buy the 12 pack on Amazon for $65 but now it’s $100. Could anyone recommend a good Mercon V that is spec’s close to Motorcrafts or better? Thank you

Unfortunately, there's only one way prices will go and it's going to be up. You can try Kendall Mercon V, which is basically what Motorcraft is, but I don't know how much cheaper it will be. Then there's Pennzoil, Valvoline, Fram, MAG 1. Luckily, ATF doesn't require changing too often.

You could go with Amsoil Signature Series Multi-Vehicle Synthetic ATF, but that's going to cost quite a bit more.

Thanks Falcon. Out of your recommendations, which brand would be considered a step up from the Motorcraft product?

Considering ConocoPhillips is Ford's supplier, you may wish to consider Kendall Mercon V since it's the same stuff with a different label on it. Provided you can get it cheaper, of course.

I have been using Castrol or Valvoline Mercon V in my Fords. I know the Castrol was a licensed product at the time.

All costs more now. If you can't find a sale, you simply pay. Walmart might have their Super Tech Mercon-V. Haven't seen it in stock in a while. The above 3 links are from walmart.... Fram/Castrol/Valvoline Mercon-V. Any brand of Mercon-V is fine to use. I prefer full synthetics like Mobil1, Amsoil, Redline, RoyalPurple... but might not be in the budget.

I’ve been told to run the red bottle of Lubeguard by a 4R70W builder as well as it is beneficial for the trans. Does anyone know if that is true?

I have always been curious about Amsoil. Would full synthetic prove any benefit to the trans?

Replacing a conventional with a blend or synthetic, or replacing a blend with a synthetic, are always the 1st step upgrade and definitely beneficial. An inline ATF filter should be considered a 2nd beneficial upgrade. See B&M or Permacool for an ATF filter kit using a PH8a sized filter.

Old data.. but much hasn't changed

So is it safe to say that full syn ATF burns up clutches is a myth? That’s the only thing that has kept me from switching over

Burning up clutches is a driver or transmission problem. Synthetic doesn't burn up clutches. Idiocy does. Sorry, but vehicle brand/model forums, and even so-called reputable 'builders' typically don't have a clue concerning ATFs. Its a great blame game for a hardware/software/builder/owner screwups. Its always the fluids fault, and not the medicinal smokes or liquid lunches at the transmission rebuilder. Its always the fluids fault, and not the garbage parts used to manufacturer or rebuild the transmission. Its always the fluids fault, and not the clown with the programmer. Its always the fluids fault, and not the owner's neutral drops, incorrect ATF level, incorrect temperature control, or lack of filtration. This is almost as bad as blaming a 'flush machine'.

Its good that you are maintaining your transmission. Change your fluid/filters, get the ATF level correct(use a scan tool for temp even with older transmissions that had dipsticks), and use an ATF that mentions the spec that you require.

I can definitely agree with that. People do tend to blame fluids for their transmission failures. Typically when people go into a shop for a fluid flush, the damage has already been done and the fluid won’t help at all

The Amsoil will be more expensive than the Motorcraft, which you originally thought was high in your opening post. Myself, I don't think the added expense of Amsoil is worth it. Regular maintenance will do more for your transmission.

Maybe I’ll just run Motorcraft with some Lubeguard and call it a day

Why add Lubeguard? What’s deficient about the Motorcraft branded fluid you’re trying to mitigate?
I’m in a group on Facebook that is run by one of the guys that assisted in developing the 4R70W with Jerry Wrobleski that religiously recommends using it. I don’t know if 4R70W’s run a tad hot from factory but that is what is constantly preached by him and everyone in that group that either daily drives, tows, or races with that trans. So with that said that is the reason why I considered it

Check and see if there is a smaller auto parts supply store that caters more to repair shops. Not big box store. We have one in my town called United Auto Supply and they carry everything Motorcraft and AC Delco at reasonable prices. Last year had to change transmission fluid on the suv and got a 5 quart jug of Mercon LV for $21.
