Motorcraft is marketed as a syn blend but is it anymore synthetic than Pennzoil conventional which is marketed as a conventional?

I am using Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 in my Ford 5.4 3v but wonder if Motorcraft adds anything over the Pennzoil conventional?

Both are great oils, the Motorcraft being a blend would offer longer service intervals(mileage will vary here) and "better" cold start ability. Don't let that make you put Pennzoil conventional down as it is also a very good oil. Conventional oils can crank well enough in most cold weather so no harm no foul.

Both are good, use whats on sale. If your in a really cold winter environment then the MC blend might be your bet without jumping into the full synthetics and their prices.

The Pennzoil is a blend too so I'd use which ever color of bottle you like or cost if there ever is a difference.

TONS of threads on either oil. Both will take your engine well past any miles you'd like to see.

Take care, Bill

(I seem to change everybody else's oil)

Don't get caught up on what a oil is made of.

Get caught up on the PERFORMANCE of the oil. (ie TOTAL package)

If we could take a bunch of vehicles and run the all exactly the same for 300k miles, put in Pennzoil 5w-20 in half and MC 5w-20 in the other half in the end there would be NO DIFFERENCE in the vehicles other than what ever manufacturing differences could have impacted the test.

Blend this and group that is all marketing. Performance of an oil is fact.

Take care, bill

Pennzoil Conventional is not a blend. Pennzoil Conventional is made from Group II+ base stocks with a good additive package.

MC blend is a mix of Group II and Group III base stocks with a good additive package.

I would use Pennzoil Conventional for obvious reasons, but they are both good products. Flip a coin.

Hi Johnny,

The Pennzoil people told me about a year ago IIRC that YB in a 5W20 was actually a blend vs their 5W30. Any truth to that? It was only the 5W20 that they claimed was a blend in order to get that viscosity.

I would really like for people to realize how good GPII+ base stocks are.

No Bill, if you'd have used a racing oil with group 10 base oil and 20,000 ppm zinc, that engine would be better.
