I don't understand how an oil can jump price so much. Does anyone know if the formula changed?

I don't know if they have API SQ? It's the mothership brand so they'll try to push it? I think I've bought MotorCraft once...lol. Some folks here said it was Phillips 66 once upon a time but I don't know who is making it now. I'm sure there are some true fans & no harm done.

Back when I owned a 2004 Mazda6 with the Duratec 2.3L I used Motorcraft 5w-20 semi-syn exclusively. I recall getting it pretty cheap at the time.....at least cheaper than full synthetics were. Sold the car to my neighbor who still has it and still uses Motorcraft semi syn. Has close to 170K miles and running strong.

It is a good oil.
That having been said, the thought of paying $5.80 a quart for what is basically P66 Shield is obscene and nauseating.
On top of that it is a blend, and not even full syn.
That is the perfect example of a product that is priced out of its market.

I would do this instead -- even better, 5-30 same price. API SQ

Quaker State Full Synthetic 0W-20 Motor Oil, 5-Quart

Everything 'Motorcarft' has skyrocketed in price. This oil was very reasonable when I first came on this site...which is why it was popular.
The Motorcraft 910 oil filter was under $4 when I bought my Fords ....now it's about $9. Motorcraft spark plugs on Rockauto have doubled in price in the last couple of years. I'm thinking they want to get as much $$$ as possible from those who insist on using OE parts.

I agree that Motorcraft 5w20 blend is a good oil but probably no better than Supertech Full Synthetic and certainly not better than QS, Pennzoil, Mobil 1 full synthetics etc....all of which sell for less at WM.

Too much for a blend and at that we don't know the blend ratio. It could be 25% syn or less. I would choose Supertech or Quaker State Full Synthetic for that price and less. I just bought 24 5qt jugs of Quaker State Full Synthetic from Autozone for $20 a jug as they were discountinuing it.

It used to be about 60% Grp 3 but that was blended with Grp 1 at the time. That was years ago no idea now.

I and many here were big fans of the now gone Trop Artic which was exactly the same stuff at half the price. used oil analysis were impressive. Current used oil analysis show Motorcraft blend is a poor choice for the Ecoboost no idea why Ford keeps rolling with it.

They have a lot of recalls to pay for.

It used to be cheap. This is within a dollars of the Mobil 1 Extended Performance that I buy at WalMart
How cheap was it back then? Because it really isn’t in the same price category as a full synthetic and should have always been priced not that much more than a conventional.
People hear synthetic blend and they assume 50% synthetic base when in reality it has probably been more like 10-25%, and group 3 at that.
The only blend I ever used was Schaeffer and it was mostly because of Bob Winters. He had a lot of people convinced that it was just as good as a full synthetic but I still have my doubts about that…
