I have an '04 Focus wagon with the standard 2.0 engine. I bought it used from a Ford dealer and it had an FL2005 filter on it, which is what I have been using. Tonight at Walmart I check the book just for kicks and notice that the 2.0 DOHC calls for the 2005 and the 2.0 SOHC (mine) calls for a 400S. I look at both and they seem to be the same in size and threads but the 2005 looks like the bypass valve is on the top (near the threads) and I think most if not all other Motorcraft filters have the bypass at the bottom.
I bought the 400S. Is that what I should use?
The car did not come with an owner's manual.

Motorcraft website says use FL400S for the SPI engine.
Maybe it really doesn't matter, but the FL2005 filter has a 16psi bypass versus 8-11psi in the FL400S.

I believe that Ford spec's an open end bypass on all of their engines. Other filter man's put them on the dome end ..but MC should have them all on the open end.

I run a FL1A on the Aerostar 3.0 V6 and it specifies FL400s. The gasket mating surface is much wider than the gasket and is the same size as on my 4.9L which specifies the FL1A.

So that may give you another option. Go with the bigger filter if it has clearance.

Good maybe now they'll put them on a closeout sale.

Where did you hear this? The Motorcraft site still lists the FL2005...

i work in back counter parts at a Ford dealer. on the ford internal site, the fl2005 lists as being replaced by the 400. when i bill out a 2005, it automatically updates to the 400.

the motorcraft site is not updated as often as the dealer pricing is. although i do use it for spark plugs at work lol.
