Hello,

I have an evolution 9 has bolts on and cams. No e85, just daily see boost everyday. No cats.

I put a 5w40 val syn but my tuner is recommand 10w40 or 20w50 for our hot days. Tx and see easy 90 + degree during the day. I found few evo performance shops using brad penn 20w50 in stock to race cars without any issue. One of shop tuner said they see less(?) or non) spun bearing issue after using 20w50, also high zinc/pho.

But mitsu recommand 10w30 and many owners saying 20w50 is too thick for stock block. But whoever using them, i havent hear any issue.

But anyway, 10w40 there isnt many companies has for that grade...which my fav companies. so if 20w50 is works, i rather run 20w50.

Im thinking about brad penn or vr1 syn 20w50. If this is too thick then rotella t6 would work? Looks like T6 seems thicker for 5w40?

Thanks.

My EVO 8 with a mild tune (21psi to a raised 8K redline) had its best used oil analysis on Red Line 10w30 in 90-100F heat for 5K OCIs and I beat it like a circus monkey once it was warm. When I did run VP 10w40 synthetic in it it sheared to a new 30wt or at the same level the Red Line was when it came out and it sheard Mobil 1 15w50 to a heavy 30wt or a super light 40wt. So, Id disregard the tunners and run a stout 10w30 and maybe even Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 if you are going to do short OCIs like 3K. If its your baby then go for the Red Line.

about 2000~3000 oil change.

Yeah it is. That's one other reason, i rather run racing oil than synthetic.

One other suggestion would be Rotella T5 10w30. Should have the turbo covered for coking prevention plus you get race oil AW all in a 4$/qrt oil. Has decent cold flow too from what Ive seen here in CO and its a heavier 30wt.

IMO, the 5W-40 you're running is probably fine. With those intervals, I would probably run whatever non-Resource Conserving oil that is on sale. GC, Rotella T6 or T5, Mobil 1 10w30/10W-40 High Mileage or 0W-40. Any of those should be fine for 4-5k mile intervals and have higher levels of zinc than Resource Conserving oils.

Shooting for 800 hp? Then go with a 50 grade.

Redline 10w40 street oil. It has the HTHS of a 50-weight, and all the zddp content your engine needs. Lengthen the OCI to ~6k or you'll be wasting money on this $11/qt oil.

Thanks for all advice guys. I decided try vr1 20w50 and do uoa and go from there.

This has come up before.
The 20W-50 recommendation has more to do with minmizing oil starvation with those that track their cars than anything else.
It's a pretty mickey mouse solution to make a stock wet sump engine survive.

Anyway, the correct way to fine tune your oil viscosity choice is based on your oil pressure readings; i.e., run the lightest oil that still provides acceptable hot OP.
I'd recommend Red Line 0w30 as it's shear proof and contains high levels of ZDDP and Moly. It's a mid-grade 30wt oil and I doubt you actually need anything heavier. If you do what something heavier just blend in some Red Line 0W-40.

Twice in a day, I agree with CATERHAM at the most you should not need any grade of oil higher than a 40 grade Red Line. Red Line's 30 grade oils should be sufficient for this application but if not you can thicken it up a bit.

Thanks.

Question, so 20w50 is more for track cars, it isnt good to run on street?
Or there is better options than a 20w50?

Redline is good product, but since i dont like to leave the oil more than a 3000 milies, i think it is waste money for me. Plus if i get a redline, i rather choose amsoil over redline, because much easier to get for me.

Since it is hot, i will feel alot better runs 40wts instead of 30.

How about delvac 15w40?

Thank you so much for reply

No reason to go above a 40-weight oil unless you're tracking it enough and reaching oil temps high enough to justify a 50-weight oil.

Running around with 20w-50 in the pan @ 220F oil temps isn't necessarily a good thing from an oil flow standpoint.

Rotella T6 should be fine. Rotella T5 would probably be fine. Redline is probably about as good as it gets for your needs.

You could run Delvac 15w40 if you felt the need. It's good stuff, but I wouldn't run a track day with it.
